Position Summary

Nutrition Technician, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Your goal in this position is to safely and accurately prepare and deliver the feeds for preterm and / or term infants in the NICU, using a controlled environment that limits the potential for cross contamination of fortifiers, powdered formulas and mixing equipment. In this role, you will be working independently preparing feeds and will effectively communicate with NICU team members, specifically nursing staff and the dietitian, to ensure an integrated patient and family centred care approach. In addition, you will prioritize and prepare accurate feeding orders, effectively handle unexpected changes in a patient’s feeding requirement and will deliver the prepared feeds to the refrigerator while adhering to aseptic procedures and avoiding waste. You have demonstrated leadership, problem solving and conflict resolution skills and can effectively time manage and prioritize your workload independently. This position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and / or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and families.

On a practical level, you will

  • Interpret, calculate, prepare and deliver all infant feeds in accordance with the patient’s diet order
  • Ensure that the handling and preparation of nutrition techniques used adhere to all sanitary regulations and standards established by the hospital infection prevention and control practices
  • Perform daily and regular cleaning of workspace and mixing equipment
  • Perform regular audits to ensure all equipment is safe for use (dishwasher, temperature regulated refrigerators and freezers, bead bath etc.)
  • Report malfunctioning equipment in accordance with established unit protocols
  • Perform proper disposal of expressed breast milk, powered formulas and additives in accordance with established unit protocols

Maintain storage facilities for all inventory

  • Participate in continuing education activities for self, peers and members of the inter-professional health care team
  • Comply with the hospital’s infection prevention and control practices
  • Participate in collaborative initiatives with the health care team to improve efficiencies and the management of the Timless® Medical Systems and the express breast milk / donor feeding policies and procedures
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Food and Nutrition from a University recognized in Dietetics and / or a 3-year diploma from a recognized accredited college program and the successful completion of a CSNM (Canadian Society of Nutrition Management) accredited program in Food Services Administration and Technology
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of aseptic technique in the preparation of feeds
  • Two years’ experience in a health care setting
  • Membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management preferred
  • Working knowledge of neonatal nutrition, therapeutic diets and additives / formulas preferred
  • Proficiency with computerized diet order entry systems preferred
  • Experience with Neonatal / Paediatric patient population preferred
  • Experience with inventory control for the milk preparation and stock preferred
  • Bilingualism in French / English an asset
