The Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Black Political Thought.

The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Political Science or a related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.

The successful candidate will specialize in Black Political Thought, understood broadly to include political thought from Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Canada, the United States, Europe, or other parts of the world.

  • The position is open with respect to approach and methodology. Examples of possible research areas include but are not limited to the history of political thought;
  • critical analysis of race, racism, and ethnicity; gendered and class hierarchies of power; colonialism, imperialism, slavery, and their afterlives;

political solidarity and social movements; and the implications of Black political thought for comparative political theory.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and deepen our existing departmental strengths. The successful candidate will undertake undergraduate and graduate teaching responsibilities on the University of Toronto's downtown (St.

George) campus. Applicants are encouraged to review the research and teaching profiles of current faculty members. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by the submitted research statement, a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

a research statement outlining current and future research interests; a recent writing sample of no more than 30 pages; and a teaching dossier including a teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations.
