Job Description :

NVIT anticipates a need for one full-time ongoing Communications Planner and invites applications from qualified candidates.

The campus location, either Merritt or Burnaby, will be determined by candidate suitability. This will be a support staff position that will commence as soon as a suitable candidate is available.

Job Summary :

The Communications Planner is a member of the Enrolment Services Team, who works collaboratively with the Events Planner;

this individual will report to the Manager of Marketing, Communications, & Events. The Communications Planner is responsible for all internal and external communications on behalf of NVIT.

This includes but is not limited to responsibility for articles, opinion editorials, social media, promotional materials and assisting the leadership team in ensuring NVIT’s message is shared.

The Communications Planner works closely with NVIT’s Events Planner as well as all employees across the institute. As a member of the Enrolment Services Team, the individual assists with selected duties of other team members as needed.

Specific Job Responsibilities Include :

  • Develop, implement, and maintain communication plans and strategies in support of the general goals and policies set by the institute
  • Research and prepare background material for media interactions
  • Create aesthetic visual content that reflects the NVIT branding
  • Coordinate the development, design, preparation, and delivery of a wide variety of print and electronic promotional and informational materials including news releases, newsletters, notices, pamphlets, brochures, and displays
  • Collaborate with departments and committees to achieve brand consistency and promote NVIT brand standards
  • Promote and participate in the planning and delivery of institutional and special events
  • Effectively communicate on-campus events and news to the internal and external NVIT community
  • NVIT’s main contact person for NVIT’s contract communication services
  • Prepare, update, and distribute monthly newsletters, podcast links, and / or blogs
  • Update and maintain the NVIT website
  • Capture photos during events and activities, as the custodian of one of the company’s cameras
  • Maintain an updated and organized media archive
  • Leverage NVIT’s branding, initiatives, communications and public relations strategies through various social media platforms and integrated efforts
  • Coordinate the planning and execution of NVIT’s various social media platforms, and public relations, and working closely with the Manager of Marketing, Communications & Events to incorporate effective marketing strategies
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships and sharing NVIT information and materials with community partners including, but not limited to, First Nation Communities, Indigenous organizations, and educational institutes within the K-12 post-secondary systems
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Requirements / Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications and / or Tourism and / or Business is preferred plus 2 years of directly related experience;
  • a combination of education and experience may be considered;
  • Understanding of Canada’s colonial history and the devastating impacts on Indigenous peoples and Indigenous ways of being and knowing;
  • Practice from a holistic, culturally safe and trauma-informed lens;
  • Advanced skills in communication, technologies, professional editing and writing, copywriting, publishing software, and Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Ability to use Hootsuite and Social Media Platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Youtube) for business communications
  • Ability to create aesthetic visual content using specialized graphic design platforms and applications (Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, Affinity)
  • Demonstrated skill in writing plain language materials : taking complex and technical information and making it interesting and easy for a layperson to understand
  • Ability to think creatively and develop innovative plans and solutions
  • Knowledge of and appreciation for Indigenous languages and cultures, and Indigenous lived experiences
  • The ability to infuse culture into all aspects of the position, ensuring NVIT’s marketing, communications and event initiatives are relevant, engaging, and holistic
  • Advanced skills using the Microsoft Office suite of applications (MS Publisher, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • A demonstrated commitment to quality service to students and the public
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate and provide services effectively using virtual platforms (Microsoft Teams etc.).
  • Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, identify service and system improvements through a systems-based lens, be logical and maintain confidentiality, and capacity to initiate action on matters relating to the Enrolment Services division.
  • Highly self-motivated, a constructive thinker with demonstrated logic and reasoning skills.
  • Proven ability to build collaborative working relationships to achieve outcomes in the best interest of students and NVIT.
  • Proven ability to model professional, ethical, and collaborative behaviors.
  • Ability to work well independently and under pressure.
  • Ability to adapt to a fluid work environment (ex. the response to COVID-19).
  • Able / willing to travel to Merritt / Vancouver Campus and other locations for work purposes.
  • Valid driver’s license.
