Position Summary

The School’s Out (SO) Program Leaders will be responsible for providing safe, quality care and service to the child participants and their families in accordance with Seabird Island policies and procedures.

The SO Program Leaders will perform on-site supervision of the program; facilitate various activities that promote physical activity, healthy eating and nutrition, positive personal development and wellness;

and to engage and support children and families in our community

What you’ll do

  • Share duties and responsibilities as part of a collaborative leadership team with all SO Program leaders.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day planning and delivery of the SO Program.
  • Ensure the provision of a caring, stimulating, and inclusive environment for the children and youth attending the program.
  • Work in consultation with Youth Initiatives Supervisor to select and facilitate activities aimed at achieving the desired outcomes.
  • Facilitate a variety of creative, social, and physical activities aimed at engaging students in fun, recreational, and life-long learning objectives.
  • Ensure the efficient day to day administration of the SO program including participant registrations, daily registers, and record keeping.
  • Plan, coordinate, and provide healthy snacks to all participants within the program guidelines accommodating all dietary restrictions.
  • Supervise and support on-site staff, volunteers and promote their contributions.
  • Supervise children attending the program and promote safety and respect amongst all participants.
  • Ensure a friendly and supportive atmosphere is maintained by developing appropriate strategies to support children in managing their behavior.
  • Respond to the individual needs of children and establish stable and consistent relationships with each child and their families / caregivers.
  • Ensure that the health and safety needs of the children are met, and all health and safety issues are dealt with immediately and appropriately.

Ensure correct procedures are followed for administering first aid.

  • Carry out daily risk assessments and ensure the supervision of children during activities inside or outside the school.
  • Supervise the cleaning and tidying of the facility and be responsible for the safe storage of equipment, maintaining that all equipment is in good working order prior to usage.
  • Ensure that appropriate policies, procedures, and methods are being utilized.
  • Plan and lead age-appropriate programs using a team approach that meet or exceed the program expectations.
  • Attend all staff meetings and training seminars as deemed necessary.
  • Inform parents of their child’s progress or day through informal means, make parents feel welcome and comfortable in the program, Keep the relationship between parents and self on a professional level.
  • Nurture and maintain relationships with all volunteers, students, parents, and staff. Develop and maintain open communication.
  • Be able to detect and deal with children’s emotional needs and / or problems in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Support a climate of forthrightness and trust in the workplace that will ensure that colleagues are able to speak and act in the best interest of children without fear of recrimination.
  • Fill in the appropriate time sheets for payroll as required.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Supervisor, Manager, Director, Executive Director, or Chief & Council.

What you bring

Education

  • Responsible Adult Certification is required or willingness to obtain.
  • High School Diploma or GED

Skills / Experience

  • Previous supervisory experience and experience working with children.
  • Program planning and facilitation experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with children in a leadership role.
  • Ability to work as a team member in a dynamic, complex environment and organize time and workload effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all levels of staff, the public and program participants while maintaining objectivity.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, community agencies and the public.
  • Ability to effectively perform job duties with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificate.
  • Must be able to work 2 : 30pm -5 : 30pm on school days, and full days on Pro-D Days
  • Proficient computer skills with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams.)
  • Proficient interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Ability to agree as well as adhere to Seabird Island Band Human Resources (HR), Finance, and Information Technology (IT) Policies and Procedures, etc.
  • Knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó : lō culture, traditions and language or willingness to learn.
  • Experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract within the last 5 years.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
