Job Summary :

On-Call Cycling Educators support CultureLink’s cycling programs on an occasional basis, teaching road safety, cycling skills and basic or intermediate bike maintenance to children, youth and adults.

They may also carry out bicycle repair or maintenance. Cycling Educators may be required to ride a bicycle in mixed traffic in all neighborhoods of Toronto, and they are expected to model safe and responsible cycling behavior.

Cycling Educators work in locations across the City. In 2024-2025, some shifts will take place at schools, where CultureLink is contracted to provide programs during the school day, covering road safety, cycling skills and basic bike maintenance.

Other shifts will take place at the CultureLink Bike Hub. The CultureLink Bike Hub provides free access to bicycle parts and tools, support from experienced bike mechanics, and workshops and training on bike repair.

Funded by the City of Toronto as a Community Reduce and Reuse Program, the CultureLink Bike Hub fosters a culture of repair and reuse.

Cycling Educators support the general operations of the Bike Hub, alongside on-site regular staff.

All programs are carried out in accordance with health and safety measures consistent with guidance from municipal, provincial and national public health authorities.

Duties :

  • Demonstrate and instruct bicycle riding skills
  • Demonstrate and instruct basic bike maintenance techniques
  • Inspect bicycles to determine the requirement for repair
  • Perform routine maintenance
  • Enforce safety rules and regulations
  • Support program team members and contribute to agency-wide initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Required Competencies :

Physical demands : Standing (90% of every shift); lifting from floor (20 lbs); handling tools / objects requiring strong arm grip;

use of gloves and eye protection is required in some cases

  • Non-physical demands : Following a schedule, maintaining punctuality; variety of tasks; travel for programs is required
  • Social / Emotional demands : teamwork; relationship / network-building; working close with clients and co-workers
  • Cognitive / mental demands : attention to detail; multitasking; organizational ability / time management, adaptability, sound judgement

Qualifications :

  • Emergency First Aid / CPR certification
  • CAN-BIKE Instructor or CAN-BIKE Level 4 certification
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening within the past six months
  • Fluency in Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, English, Farsi, French, Hindi, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, and / or Urdu is an asset.
  • Must be authorized to work in Canada
  • A CAN-BIKE Level 4 course (12-hour commitment) and / or Emergency First Aid / CPR course (8-hour commitment) may be provided by CultureLink to otherwise successful candidates prior to the beginning of work.
