Overview
As a member of the military, Biomedical Electronics Technologists provide technical maintenance and repair support for medical and dental equipment used in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). They use electronic instrumentation and workshop tools to ensure the accurate performance of medical devices.
The primary responsibility is to maintain medical equipment according to Canadian Standards Association and manufacturer specifications. This includes devices such as :
Work environment
Technologists may work in regional repair facilities, at Canadian Field Hospitals, or Advanced Surgical Centres, within Canada or internationally. They may also perform repairs on ships and must regularly visit medical establishments within the CAF.
Joining the Regular Force involves post-training base assignment and possible relocations. The Primary Reserve allows part-time work with one night per week and some weekends, with potential for full-time employment, and typically does not require relocation outside the assigned Reserve unit.
Entry plans
The minimum education requirement is a Diploma of Technology in Biomedical Engineering from an accredited Canadian institution and six months of recent work experience as a Biomedical Electronics Technologist. Recent graduates within 12 months of completing their program may be eligible without work experience.

Training
Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, followed by one year of on-the-job training. Opportunities exist for further specialization in areas like Technical Administration, Leadership, and Service Tech courses.
Part-time options
Reserve members undergo the same training as Regular Force members, with flexible on-the-job training blocks based on availability. They may serve part-time at clinics or full-time for fixed terms, earning 92.8% of Regular Force pay, with benefits and pension contributions.
