Duties

As a Senior Engineering Officer, your role is important for the safety of the vessel and the well-being of the crew. Keeping motors and machinery in good working order and quickly detecting problems is essential to making sure Coast Guard vessels remain operational and can execute their missions.

Under the direction of the Chief Engineering Officer, you are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the vessels propulsion machinery and auxiliary equipment.

You must be able to quickly troubleshoot broken equipment and make needed repairs. You also directly supervise and coordinate the work of other engine room personnel.

Your responsibilities as a Senior Engineering Officer may include :

Supervises, plans and directs the day-to-day operation, maintenance and repair of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems.

Provides technical support to vessel client personnel to assist in the conduct of program operations.

  • Leads and / or participates in, damage control, fire fighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations;
  • Recommends and assists with refit specifications, vessel's additions and alterations, and other contract repair work required for the upkeep of the vessel;

Coordinates and supervises the watch keeping system, and stands assigned watches on a relief basis.

Makes recommendations to the Chief Engineer pertaining to the engine room's material resource needs.

Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.

Transport Canada Certification of Competency, 3rd Class Engineer Motor Ship with valid STCW Continued Proficiency of Endorsement.

Transport Canada Certification of Competency, 2nd Class Engineer Motor Ship with valid STCW Continued Proficiency of Endorsement.

ABILITY :

EXPERIENCE :

Operational experience as Senior Dayworking Engineer on Coast Guard Class A or higher vessel.

Operational experience as Senior Dayworking Engineer, on a vessel with a minimum of KW propulsion power.

Experience in Marine Engineering Shore based positions.

Experience with preventive / predictive maintenance practises and experience with maintenance management programs.

Conditions of employment

Secret Security Clearance.

Valid Health Canada Medical for seagoing personnel.

Maintain a valid Certificate of Competency

Requirement to go to sea for prolonged periods of time and in adverse weather conditions.

Requirement to wear and maintain a uniform, safety footwear, and personal protective equipment to Canadian Coast Guard standards.

Willingness and ability to work overtime as required

Willingness to be deployed within the Atlantic Region.

Compliance with the CCG Safety Management System and Standards

Adherence to the Canadian Coast Guard Respiratory Protection Program

For vessels assigned primarily to Search and Rescue operations, employees must be within 30 minutes response time to the vessel during assigned work period.

Valid Canadian Passport (for identified positions)

Must be willing and able to travel by air, land or by sea
