We are seeking a dedicated full-time Articling Student who is interested in Criminal Defence to join our legal team. This paid position offers an excellent opportunity for aspiring lawyers to gain hands-on experience in criminal law, develop essential legal skills, and contribute to meaningful client advocacy. The role involves working closely with senior counsel, assisting with case preparation, and engaging in various legal research and drafting tasks.
Duties
- Conduct legal research using LexisNexis, WestLaw and Canlii and other legal databases to support case strategies
- Assist in preparing legal documents, including motions, affidavits, through precise legal drafting
- Participate in client interviews and prepare summaries / memos for case review
- Support lawyers in trial preparation, including organizing evidence and exhibits
- Engage in negotiations with opposing counsel or clients as directed
- Draft reports, memos, and correspondence related to criminal defence cases
- Attend court proceedings and observe courtroom procedures to gain practical experience
- Maintain accurate case files and ensure the confidentiality of sensitive information
Experience
Currently enrolled in a Juris Doctor (JD) program or equivalent law degree program with eligibility for articling placementStrong negotiation skills demonstrated through coursework or internships are advantageousExcellent research abilities with a keen eye for detail and accuracyExceptional writing skills, including clear and concise legal drafting capabilitiesDemonstrated understanding of criminal law principles and procedures is a plusAbility to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environmentThis position provides valuable practical experience for future legal professionals committed to criminal defence.
