Department of Social Science: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Social Work

The Department of Social Science at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John invites applications for a tenure-track position in Social Work.

The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor. This position is housed within an interdisciplinary department that includes Social Work, Sociology, Communication Studies, and Education.

The Bachelor of Social Work program offers a generalist social work education. The first intake of students is expected in September 2024.

The Bachelor of Social Work Program welcomes all qualified applicants and encourages equity deserving / denied groups to apply to this position.

Prospective candidates are invited to voluntarily indicate whether they identify as an equity deserving / denied group.

The appointment will begin on July 1, 2024 and is subject to budgetary approval.

The successful candidate will have :

  • Master's in social work and a PhD in Social Work or related field (or all doctoral requirements and successful defense completed before the time of appointment)
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in university teaching and research.
  • Two or more years of social work practice experience post BSW or MSW or relevant lived experience.
  • Knowledge and experience of decolonialization, equity, and intersectionality in practice and education.
  • A determination to uphold the commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at UNBSJ.
  • Knowledge of the unique experiences of Canadian Indigenous peoples and the impact that social work practice has had and will have on these
  • communities. An ability to teach indigenous perspectives of social work would be an asset.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following fields : Indigenous pedagogy, social justice, the social determinants of health, theory, working with an aging population, anti-black racism, Francophone Canadian perspectives, rural social work, and / or multi-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Previous experience with experiential learning would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of the social service and community development network in New Brunswick would be an asset.
  • Eligibility for registration with the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers.

Persons of equity deserving / denied groups have traditionally experienced systemic barriers while trying to access certain spaces, educational programs, and professions.

  • The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in social work, such as SWRK 3002 : Intercultural Safety and Communication;

SWRK 3003 : Theory and Ethics in Social Work; SWRK 4003 : Family and Child Welfare; SWRK 4706 : Indigenous Legislation and Policy.

The successful candidate will have input into future development of the Social Work curriculum and may be able to develop courses in their specific area of expertise.

The successful candidate will be expected to be engaged in a program of research, scholarly, or creative activity within their area of expertise.
