Ministry Overview

Forestry and Parks is responsible for managing forests, public lands and provincial parks. The main accountabilities include :

  • Growing Alberta’s environmentally responsible wood products and forestry sector
  • Protecting Alberta’s forests from wildfire
  • Preserving our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans
  • Enabling access to public lands for recreation while prioritizing conservation
  • Managing public lands and balancing sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers

The Land Operations Division delivers an integrated approach to the management of provincial Crown Land, serving diverse users such as conservation, recreation, tourism, energy, forestry, agriculture and traditional land uses.

Field Supervisor Role

The Field Supervisor plays a critical hands‑on role in delivering Crown land recreation programs within a diverse, multi‑use landscape. Reporting to the District Recreation Engagement Officer, this position oversees the planning, coordination, and field execution of recreation infrastructure projects, while supervising seasonal staff and ensuring all activities meet safety, environmental, and legislative requirements. The Field Supervisor works extensively in remote backcountry settings, maintaining trails and facilities, managing resources, and collaborating with partners, volunteers and stakeholders to support high‑quality, sustainable outdoor recreation experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading field delivery of recreation infrastructure projects, including trail and facility maintenance
  • Conducting field assessments and adapting work methods to challenging backcountry conditions
  • Supervising, training, and supporting seasonal staff while fostering a safe, positive team environment
  • Managing equipment, materials and on‑site resources required for project execution
  • Ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety, environmental standards and legislation
  • Collaborating with partners, volunteers and stakeholders while reporting on project progress and identifying improvements

    Qualifications

    Minimum Requirements : A completed two‑year technical diploma in a related field (forestry, land management, construction‑related trade).

    Equivalencies : Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one‑for‑one basis.

    Additional Requirements :

  • A valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License
  • A valid Intermediate First Aid certificate with CPR Level C and AED certificate
  • Assets :

  • Supervisory and leadership abilities to guide and manage teams
  • Experience operating and maintaining a variety of equipment (trucks, OHVs, 4x4 vehicles, power tools)
  • Experience working independently in remote and challenging mountainous environments
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Competence in identifying key environmental features (vegetation, soils, wildlife, water bodies)
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation (Public Lands Act, Wilderness Areas Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, etc.)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven interpersonal communication skills to develop and maintain positive relationships
  • Technical backcountry skills (orientation, map reading, compass navigation)

    Additional Employment Information

  • Seasonal wage position located in Hinton – 36.25 hours per week
  • Length of employment approx. 8 months (April – November)
  • Flexible work schedule, with possibility of overtime and weekend shifts
  • Training Provided (if required)

    OHV training (ATV and UTV), 4x4 vehicles and power tools.

    What We Offer

  • Wage employees receive 11.6% in addition to regular wage earnings in lieu of paid holidays and vacation leave : 5.6% of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays, and 6% of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay.
