Process Engineer – Flare and Overpressure Relief Systems
Location : Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada
Job Description
We are seeking a Process Engineer to support flare and overpressure relief systems design and risk assessment for projects in the petroleum refining, upgrading and petrochemical sectors.
- Perform PRV and PVSV sizing calculations, maintaining strong knowledge of overpressure relief scenarios and hydraulic processes.
- Lead and facilitate risk assessment sessions for project plant changes, including PHAs, HAZIDs / HAZOPs, facility siting / layout studies, bowties, LOPAs, HEMP and other process safety risk studies.
- Provide guidance to EPC contractors on the preparation of detailed equipment specifications.
- Interpret, review and critique critical diagrams such as cause and effect, mechanical flow, piping, and instrumentation (P&ID).
- Support project reviews, plant changes, major maintenance, turnarounds, and projects by providing assurance and guidance on Statements of Fitness – Pre‑startup Safety (SoF‑PSSRs).
- Identify and model fire, explosion, and dispersion scenarios using FRED, PHAST or equivalent programs.
- Authenticate the work of others via thorough review and stamp approval.
- Facilitate knowledge sharing across projects, capturing and implementing lessons learned.
- Apply human factors, operability, and maintainability standards.
- Support construction, commissioning, and startup activities.
Requirements
BSc in Chemical, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.7+ years of Process Safety and / or Process Engineering experience in petroleum refining, upgrading and / or petrochemicals.APEGA registered with a Professional Engineering designation.Experience with process simulation software (Unisym, Hysis, Flarenet).Experience with dispersion and explosion modelling software.Knowledge of relevant codes and standards including API 520 / 521, API 537, API 754, ASME Sec VIII.Strong facilitation, communication, leadership, and coaching skills, with a commitment to diversity.Seniority Level
