What is the COVE Internship Program

We are looking for bright talented individuals at the post-secondary level interested in the marine sector who are looking to gain valuable hands-on work experience. You will be placed with a host company in the marine sector and will be working on a core project for their business. Projects areinterdisciplinaryand students will be collaborating closely with other students and staff from different disciplines.

The COVE internship is a collaboration withnumerouscompanies that are leaders in the marine and marine technologysector. We are diligent in placing students in a role with a company that is well aligned with their discipline of study skillset and future career ambitions. Canadas marine sector is growing and thriving and contributes millions of dollars to our national economy on an annual basis. COVE is seeking interns who are Canadas best and brightest to be part of this phenomenal growth.

  • Internship Eligibility:
    • Open to post-secondary students across all disciplines (i.e.Environmental Sciences Statistics Engineering Computer Science Business Marketing and Communications etc.)
    • Students must be actively enrolled in a post-secondary program at the time of the summer internship
    • Based on the required skillsets placements are typically geared towards second-year undergraduate students and above
    • Collaborative self-starter
    • Open to learning
    • Have experience or an interest in the marine sector
    • International students must be eligible to work in Canada and have a valid study/work permit

The Opportunity:

The Sensor & Equipment Applied Technologies Applied Research Centre (SEATAC) is an ocean technologyfocused applied research group within Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). SEATAC works closely with industry government and academic partners to design build test and deploy marine and oceanographic instrumentation sensing systems and data acquisition platforms. Our work supports innovation in coastal monitoring marine operations environmental sensing and ocean technology development with a strong emphasis on hands-on prototyping field validation and real-world deployment.


What you will be doing:

The Mechanical Engineering Technologist will be based at the SEATAC laboratory at COVE and NSCCs Ivany Campus. Interns will work under the direct supervision of SEATAC research staff and will be fully integrated into a multidisciplinary applied research team.


You will participate in hands-on engineering activities field data collection and analysis and applied research workflows that reflect real-world marine ocean technology and industry project conditions.


Key Deliverables


  • Design documentation and technical drawings for mechanical and instrumentation components.
  • Bills of Materials (BOMs) and component specifications.
  • Assembly integration and functional testing of prototypes and experimental setups.


What you will bring:


  • Enrolled in a relevant technical program at a Canadian community college (or equivalent institution) in mechanical engineering or related applied sciences or engineering disciplines.
  • Basic mechanical design and fabrication knowledge.
  • Familiarity with hand tools lab equipment and mechanical assemblies.
  • Ability to follow technical procedures and safety protocols.
  • Strong problem solving-skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic data analysis and technical documentation skills.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling or CAD software for system design.
