Role
The Electrical Protection & Controls Engineer is a senior technical individual contributor with deep expertise in power system protection, control, and coordination within energy, utilities, and industrial EPCM projects.
This role is responsible for the technical leadership, design, analysis, programming, and execution of protection and control systems, ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant electrical systems for Catch Engineering’s clients.
The Engineer functions independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams, working closely with Project Managers, Electrical Engineers, and client stakeholders. This role emphasizes hands-on technical excellence, problem-solving, and mentorship, without formal people-management responsibility.
Areas of Accountability
- Lead or support the technical design and implementation of protection and control systems under the direction of the Project Manager
- Develop protection and control design bases, philosophies, specifications, and scopes of work
- Perform protection coordination studies, load flow, short circuit analysis, and arc flash studies using ETAP or equivalent tools
- Prepare and issue technical study reports and engineering recommendations
Protection Relay Programming & Configuration
Perform hands-on programming, configuration, and testing of electrical protection and management relaysDevelop, modify, and validate relay settings files, logic schemes, and configuration databasesConfigure protection, control, metering, and monitoring functions for feeders, transformers, motors, generators, and bus systemsSupport integration of protection relays with SCADA, substation automation, and plant control systemsParticipate in FAT, SAT, commissioning, energization, and troubleshooting activitiesExperience with common relay platforms including : SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories) GE Multilin ABB / Hitachi Energy (Relion series) Siemens SIPROTEC Schneider ElectricDesign, Documentation & Standards
Produce and review protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, I / O schematics, and cable schedulesSupport preparation of electrical construction bid documents, CWPs, and EWPsExecute designs in accordance with NEC, ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, NFPA, utility, and client standardsQualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent Diploma program15+ years of experience in electrical engineering with significant focus on protection and controlsDemonstrated hands-on experience programming, configuring, and testing protection relaysExperience with major relay manufacturers such as SEL, GE Multilin, ABB / Hitachi, Siemens, Schneider, and BaslerExperience performing protection coordination, short circuit, and arc flash studiesStrong knowledge of utility, generation, renewables, and industrial electrical systemsAbility to work on multiple concurrent EPCM projectsStrong written and verbal communication skillsWillingness to travel within Western Canada (10–20%)Substation and / or generation project experience considered an assetWhat Catch Offers
