Duties

DAY IN THE LIFE

Imagine yourself spending your summers working primarily outdoors on evenings and weekends, traveling by boat or vehicle throughout the southern Gulf Islands with a tight-knit team or independently, assisting visitors at campgrounds and communicating national park conservations objectives to the public.

Yes, it is hard work and you should expect to be very active; visiting anywhere between 2-5 campgrounds a day rain or shine, walking for long periods of time carrying a backpack, and responding to fluctuating visitor demands.

But is it worth it? Yes!!! The payoff is great and you will experience a summer that you will never forget.

Gulf Islands National Park Reserves Visitor Services team is looking for individuals who are passionate about the outdoors, demonstrate a high degree of customer service, and are keen on educating visitors about the local natural and cultural history of one of Canadas most unique places.

As a Visitor Services Attendant, your work is focused on facilitating exceptional national park experiences by interacting with local and international visitors, selling camping permits and firewood, registering boaters at mooring buoys and docks, cleaning and maintaining campgrounds, as well as providing information about the park reserve in person, by phone and electronically.

Your daily schedule involves working closely with other team members regularly on evenings and weekends as you travel to campgrounds and mooring locations throughout the national park reserve, the majority of which are in stunning and remote island locales.

You are a valued member of a small team of dedicated staff, and you may provide occasional mentorship to student positions.

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canadas outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

Intent of the process

This selection process will be used to staff various permanent seasonal and / or temporary positions (approximately April to September).

A qualifying list will be established and may be used to fill similar positions of various tenures (indeterminate, seasonal, temporary, full-time, part-time) and various locations within the Parks Canada Agency.

EDUCATION :

A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and / or experience.

EXPERIENCE :

Experience in interacting with the public in a reception / orientation capacity.

Experience in anticipating / meeting public needs, resolving complaints, anticipating / detecting incidents and finding solutions.

Experience handling cash and operating point of sales.

Experience working collaboratively in a small team environment.

Various language requirements

English Essential and / or Bilingual Imperative ( B / B)

KNOWLEDGE :

Knowledge of Parks Canada operations and the natural and cultural history of Gulf Islands National Park Reserve.

Knowledge of Gulf Island National Park Reserve programs, visitor services operations, fees, and services.

Knowledge of the operation of automated cash and related computerized applications used to provide cashier services, prepare sales reports, compile statistics and register reservations.

General knowledge of visitor experience prevention or compliance guidelines.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE :

Experience operating vessels in a marine environment.

Experience in the cleaning and maintenance of facilities.

Experience working outside in a variety of weather conditions.

Conditions of employment

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :

Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance.

Possession of a valid class 5 drivers license.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

The position requires the incumbent to :

Make moderate physical effort to sit and / or stand for prolonged periods and / or to clean facilities / grounds.

Perform certain strenuous physical tasks as per job requirements lifting up to 25 kg / 55 lbs. and walking multiple kilometers a day.

Be exposed to noxious odours from car and / or boat fumes; to dust, cleaning products and wet conditions.

Be exposed to variable weather conditions.

Be exposed to stress when responding to fluctuating, unpredictable visitor demands and requirements.

Be exposed to minor injury when performing cleaning and maintenance activities.

Occasionally demonstrate tasks to others.

Wear a Parks Canada uniform and abide by uniform policy.

Work shift work, and / or evenings, and / or weekends and / or statutory holidays and / or provincial / territorial holidays.

Work / travel in varied terrain, marine and weather conditions throughout the GINPR work area and by vessel and vehicle.

Operate marine vessels and obtain successful certification in Small Vessel Operator Proficiency, Marine Emergency Duties A3, and ROCMC - Restricted Operator's Certificate - Maritime (training provided).

Willingness to obtain and maintain valid First Aid and CPR certification (training provided).

Willingness to respond to urgent situations and emergencies Provide first aid, communicate with visitors and other staff during emergencies, report incidents to authorities).

Parks Canada housing is not available for students occupying positions in Sidney or on Pender Island. However, affordable Parks Canada housing may be available for positions on Saturna Island.
