Clinical Biochemist

Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is the sole provider of laboratory services in the province of Alberta. APL is seeking 2 full time (1.0 FTE), qualified Clinical Biochemists to join our team of clinical laboratory doctoral scientists and pathologists in Edmonton, Alberta. These positions are based at our North Sector Hub Laboratory, which performs both high volume general chemistry and specialized chemistry testing and provides consulting services to laboratories outside of Alberta. The successful candidate will also support urban and rural testing at some hospitals across Northern Alberta. Periodic travel to sites is required. Experience with informatics and / or mass spectrometry is an asset. The successful candidates will be involved with teaching medical laboratory science students and mentoring / training clinical biochemistry fellows, pathology residents, and other visiting fellows.This is a key clinical laboratory position within APL that reports to the Medical Lead of Clinical Biochemistry, Hub Laboratory, North Sector and the Clinical Biochemistry Section Chief, North Sector.There are 2 positions available.

Description :

Accountability for this role includes, but are not limited to : Support clinical biochemistry testing in rapid response hospital labs.Liaise with clinical users of laboratory services regarding medical, scientific, and operational issues and decisions related to clinical biochemistry, including on-call service.Interpret and report protein electrophoresis, alpha-1 antitrypsin phenotyping, CSF oligoclonal banding, cryoglobulin typing, and thalassemia / hemoglobinopathy investigation.Contribute to the team that reviews and approves clinical referred out testing.Provide advice and consultation to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers on the selection of appropriate tests and interpretation of results used in investigation, diagnosis and monitoring of disease.Support safety, quality control and quality assurance processes, instrument / method development and validation, as well as test utilization initiatives.Provide knowledge transfer of emerging and innovative methodologies and procedures to staff and colleagues.Participate in academic and administrative committees, where appropriate. Administrative activities include participation in departmental, regional and provincial networks.Conduct collaborative research and development, and support consulting services and clinical trials.Support teaching in general pathology, hematopathology, hematology, clinical biochemistry and medical laboratory science programs.Provide input on workforce planning, recruitment, capital equipment, and strategic planning for Clinical Biochemistry.

Required Qualifications :

The successful candidate will have a PhD and be board-certified (i.e. FCACB or DABCC designation or equivalent) or be eligible for board certification in Clinical Biochemistry.

Additional Required Qualifications :

The successful candidate must demonstrate effective communication, problem solving, project management, time management and leadership skills, and an ability to work both independently and within a team in a fast-paced, changing environment. Applicants shall possess a strong track record of collegiality with coworkers, academic accomplishments, and evidence of ongoing continuing education in clinical biochemistry.
