The City is searching for a qualified lawyer with a specialization in Environmental and Aboriginal Law. The ideal candidate will have the ability to navigate the complexities of these fields and provide expert advice to various interested parties within the corporation.

Primary duties include :

  • Environmental Law : Provide timely legal advice on environmental management systems, contaminated sites, compliance, investigations, liability assessment, and site management handling construction contracts and environmental regulatory matters.
  • Aboriginal Law : Offer expert advice on the duty to consult, Indian Act, Addition to Reserve process, and Indigenous Governance.
  • Public Procurement : Provide legal advice on procurement processes and drafting construction contracts.
  • Municipal Corporation Context : Deliver legal advice within the context of the corporation and public law and policy.
  • Collaboration : Work collaboratively with other members of Legal Services to ensure a consistent approach to matters while supporting members of all Business Units across the corporation.
  • Technology Utilization : Leverage new technology to achieve legal service business process efficiencies.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (, Bachelor of Laws (, or equivalent degree from a recognized institution.
  • Active membership or eligibility for membership with The Law Society of Alberta.
  • At least 5 years' work experience in 3 of the following areas : construction contracts, procurement, environmental and aboriginal law.
  • Experience in both environmental law and aboriginal law is required; proficiency in both areas is a valuable asset.
  • Municipal or public law experience is advantageous.
  • The ideal candidate demonstrates thoughtfulness, results-oriented thinking, and the ability to thrive in technically challenging legal environments.
  • Strategic approach to legal matters, technical expertise, and a commitment to creative problem-solving.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to manage competing interests, tight timelines, and collaborate effectively with internal and external interested parties.
