Assistant Director of Faith and Action at North Central College

Address the spiritual needs of a religious diverse college community through unique, interesting, and relevant programs. Work closely to develop and empower student leaders.

Effectively tell the story of the Office of Faith and Action on and off campus. Help lead transformative services, events, and opportunities for the College community.

Description of Key Responsibilities

1. Coordinate marketing and communication efforts of the Office of Faith and Action utilizing blast emails, social media, print materials, podcasts, and video posts.

2. In cooperation with the director of faith and action, plan and participate in ceremonies and celebrations including, but not limited to, Opening Convocation, Homecoming, Martin Luther King week, Anti-Hate Week, Good Friday, Ash Wednesday, Honors Convocation, Baccalaureate, Commencement.

3. In cooperation with the director, the Catholic campus minister, student organizations, and local partners organize and lead a comprehensive set of faith and belief engagement opportunities.

a. Coordinate regular Christian worship services including 12 : 5, Focus, and the Lux Veritas Speaker Series.

b. Promote small group opportunities, Bible studies, prayer groups, and the Mindfulness Meditation Series.

c. Coordinate and promote cultural and religious celebrations from various faith traditions, including the College Seder dinner and MSA Iftar.

d. Coordinate special services and spiritual outreach responses to events that impact the North Central community and to local or national emergencies and crises.

4. Utilize campus resources, community partners, and the faith and action staff, organize campus-based and community events such as Feed the Need, NILA Interfaith Prayer Services, and Unity Partnership rallies.

Work closely with College connections and opportunities with the Center for Social Impact, Multicultural Affairs, Leadership Ethics and Values, Religious Studies, and Engaged Learning.

5. Develop a spiritual growth program for student athletes in cooperation with athletics staff and student leaders.

6. Maintain strong and effective student groups and opportunities that respond to student needs. Advise appropriate student organizations with a focus on student leadership development and empowerment.

7. Provide individual care and spiritual guidance for students. Provide referrals to relevant resources including Dyson Wellness Center, Student Success Services, Career Development, etc.

8. Coordinate faith-based service opportunities and trips using campus vehicles and arranging other appropriate transportation through the Center for Social Impact and the Engaged Learning staff.

9. Develop opportunities to engage students in summer internships, ministry teams, and service opportunities.

10. Participate in staff meetings, Student Affairs meetings, and annual planning events.

11. Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. As a role model for the College community the behavior of the Assistant Director of Faith and Action must be consistent with the highest standards of Christian morality as defined in the Social Principles of the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church and the College’s core values.

2. Appreciate an ecumenical and interfaith spirit, i.e., be able to work effectively in a Christian work setting with students, faculty and staff who represent the broad spectrum of Christian traditions (Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Evangelical, Protestant, Pentecostal, etc.

as well as welcoming students, staff, and faculty from a broad range of global faiths and beliefs (Islam, Judaism, Hindu, Buddhist, Atheists, etc.).

3. Ability to quickly understand the College’s organization and operation, including the ability to consistently demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills in dealing with persons both internal and external to the College.

4. Ability to work effectively as a member of a small staff where teamwork is the rule.

5. Ability to deal with and effectively prioritize several tasks concurrently, often without supervision. This requires a person able to effectively set goals, is well organized, detail oriented, and results focused.

6. Possess strong interpersonal skills, good listening skills, as well as astute observational skills.

7. Ability to communicate in the English language, both in writing and oral presentations to groups in a manner that reflects positively on the College.

8. Demonstrate proficiency producing content and posting on social media platforms

9. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the College. Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

The individual in this position plays an important role in developing the spiritual lives of students and through loving-kindness, doing justice, and practicing spiritual discipline.

They build essential relationships with students, staff members, and faculty through programming and collaboration.

Christian communities are characterized by their commitment to care for all people, especially to individuals who are oppressed, hurting, searching, or in need.

The assistant director, as part of the faith and action team, cultivates a desire for spiritual growth, service, and outreach.

The assistant director is an essential member of a team focused on the spiritual development of students as they engage their faith and beliefs as part of their identity which occurs by developing life-changing programs, student organizations, and projects.

As assistant director, the individual in this position must employ a relational approach with students, staff, and faculty and reach out across the College to build partnerships and programs to enhance the spiritual development of the community.

Student leadership development and service to a diverse, inclusive, and equitable populations are keys to a successful ministry.

The assistant director must be able to interact with people from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, at times in emotionally charged situations, while consistently displaying empathy and compassion, high standards of personal conduct, and appropriate discretion to an individuals’ right to privacy.

Education / Training

A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent life experience is required. Ordination or certification for ministry preferred.

Experience

Prior experience as a campus ministry leader

Licenses or Certifications

A valid driver’s license is required.
