Director, Western Arctic Research Centre

The Director, Western Arctic Research Centre (WARC) is located in Inuvik and one of nine positions reporting to the Vice President, Research.

The position is responsible for the long term planning of WARC, which includes development of research programs, development of partnerships, research programming, logistics services, the STEM Outreach and GIS Programs at the Western Arctic Research Centre.

The Director provides leadership to the WARC Management Team and employees in the implementation of research and education programming at WARC.

The WARC is a regional hub of scientific activity in the western Arctic, which provides support for over 100 external field research programs each year.

These research programs vary in scale, time commitment and complexity. These research programs are conducted in highly collaborative environments, ranging from small research parties up to large and complex multidisciplinary expeditions with studies jointly involving many (2- 8) universities and up to 50 team members.

The active research community that operates from WARC requires the Director to provide scientific guidance, logistical planning strategies, and to work and collaborate with a diverse group of scientists and researchers from NWT communities, universities, government departments, industry and international organizations.

This role is accountable for planning and implementing a science program that is aligned with Aurora College priorities and objectives and meets diverse client / stakeholder requirements and expectations.

The incumbent must not only be an effective manager but must also have a breadth and depth of scientific experience sufficient to collaborate on multi-disciplinary research projects.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by :

• Completion of a PhD in Natural, Physical or Environmental Science
• Five years’ experience in research project management
• Five years’ progressive experience in management / supervision of staff
• Five years’ experience implementing research programs in remote locations

Salary Information

The salary for this position starts at $58.88 per hour (approximately $114,816.00 per annum) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $14,661.00
