About the Role
The Director of External Communications is responsible for collaborating with the VP of Marketing & Communications to create and oversee the execution of external communication strategies that support Food Banks Canada’s mission and vision.
This includes managing the organization’s communication activities, including proactive and reactive media relations, public relations, spokesperson development and training, risk, issue and crisis media management.
Working closely with the Director, Network & Internal Communications and Director of Marketing, this position will ensure consistent messaging, visual representation, and positioning across all external channels and audiences.
This position is also responsible for the management and oversight of the organization’s PR agency, including working with them to develop and execute the annual public relations plan, managing budgets, and tracking campaign performance.
The Director of External Communications works cross-functionally to support the goals of the Development and Partnerships and the Network and Government Relations teams.
What You Will Be Doing
- Collaborate with the VP of Marketing & Communications in the development of external organizational communications plans.
- Collaborate with the Director, Network & Internal Communications and the Director of Marketing, to ensure alignment in strategic communication direction, messaging, and visual representation, across all channels and audiences.
- Implement and monitor the organization’s annual communication plans, campaign and content calendar to support campaign and messaging alignment across the organization.
- Provide strategic leadership and supervision of the communication team, including coaching, training, and developing high-performing team members.
- In conjunction with the Director, Network & Internal Communications and Director of Marketing, manage and build relationships with external agencies and partners in the development of communication campaigns and materials.
- Develop and execute communications plans to increase awareness for HungerCount, the Poverty Report Cards, research initiatives, and After the Bell, among other Food Banks Canada programs and initiatives.
What You Will Need
- Completion of an undergraduate degree or equivalent in marketing, business administration, public relations, communications, or related field.
- Minimum 6 years’ professional experience in public relations and communications, preferably in a non-profit / charitable organization.
- Experience leading, coaching, mentoring, and motivating a professional, cross-functional team to achieve goals.
- Proven experience working in a digital environment including social media, content management systems and analytics and measurement platforms.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to effectively coordinate multiple projects, deadlines, and priorities.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills; clear, professional, and warm communicator.
Working Conditions
Full-time, Monday-Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work. This position is remote and may be based anywhere in Canada.
Occasional travel within Canada may be required.
