Ready to make an impact:Major Responsibilities:Under the direction of the Supervisor of the Mooka’am Team the Children's Mental Health Worker will:
  • Ensure all requests for services are processed in a caring, holistic, culturally based, and professional manner consistent with NCFST’s established standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Conduct holistic family assessments using the Family Healing Model, co-create goals/objectives with the family, and identify appropriate resources to meet needs including CYW work with Sick Kids Hospital.
  • Provide one-to-one child play intervention strategies
  • Provide long-term interpersonal counselling with light case management, ongoing support, advocacy, referrals, and culturally based interventions.
  • Provide crisis support, advocacy, and group-based services as required.
  • Spend time with community members and their families to co-create an ongoing support circle.
  • Gather collateral information as appropriate from other community service agencies, etc.
  • Complete all required documentation including manual records, statistical reporting and input into NCFST’s computerized case management system.
  • Identify and refer cases to the appropriate resources and supports. Attend circles (transfer or other case conferences) as required.
  • Coordinate and oversee all case recordings and conferences.
  • Work in a safe manner in accordance with the Society’s Health and Safety Policies and Procedures and all relevant legislation.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:
  • Post Secondary Education in a relative field (BSW, BA, MA or MSW).
  • Strong understanding and practice of Indigenous approaches to healing, including land-based practices and cultural knowledge.
  • Must have training in a therapeutic modality such as Family Work, Child Play Therapy, Arts Based Therapy
  • Direct clinical experience working with children, youth, and families in a clinical setting is required within the last 5 years.
  • Sound clinical skills in working with families using the Systemic Approach.
  • Desire to learn new clinical skills combined with Indigenous traditional approach.
  • Pass a vulnerable sector police records check.
  • Knowledge and awareness of the diverse urban Indigenous population.
  • Understanding of client-centered and First Nation, Metis, and Inuit community-based work.
  • Team skills to work collaboratively with others.
  • Effective counselling and crisis support skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Time management, organizational, and coordination skills.
  • Understanding of Native Child and Family Services of Toronto Mission and values.
  • Understanding of Workplace Health and Safety practices and understanding of an employee’s responsibility under current legislation.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff, to maintain effective communication and working relationships, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, tact, sensitivity and build strong internal relationships.
