The Opportunity - Service Worker, Facilities

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement Job Classification: Service Worker 3

The Service Worker 3, Facilities Maintenance provides comprehensive facility maintenance, repair, and operational support services for various buildings across the Olds College campus. The role is focused on maintaining safe, functional, and aesthetically sound facilities while proactively identifying hazards and delivering exceptional customer service to the campus community.

Key Job Functions:

Facilities & Operations Support

  • Service Dispatches: Respond promptly and effectively to day-to-day service calls routed through the facilities management office.
  • Logistics Handling: Safely move heavy equipment or furniture across campus zones as requested by the Service Manager.
  • Seasonal Cleansing: Perform operational snow and ice removal to maintain safe pedestrian pathways and campus entryways.
  • Supply Chain Aid: Support daily Shipping and Receiving infrastructure workflows when facility demands necessitate manual assistance.

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Structural Upkeep: Install, maintain, and repair drywall, cabinets, doors, windows, tables, planters, furniture, tile, and paint across campus structures.
  • Material Fabrication: Cut, shape, fabricate, and alter materials to fit localized repair specifications.
  • Operational Logging: Document all completed repairs and maintain thorough, accurate, and legible operational records.

Health & Safety Compliance

  • Safe Work Standards: Execute all manual tasks, lifting, and machinery operations in strict accordance with safety best practices.
  • Tool Maintenance: Securely maintain, inspect, and keep all assigned tools and heavy equipment in safe, prime operating condition.
  • Hazard Inspections: Conduct regular, documented Health and Safety building walkthroughs to identify and address active hazards or required structural repairs.
  • Bio-Hazard Disposal: Support waste management initiatives and safely handle, isolate, and dispose of Bio-Hazard materials exactly per strict guidelines.

Trades Assistance

  • Utility Collaboration: Work directly under the guidance of certified tradesmen to support complex electrical, plumbing, and mechanical construction.

Professionalism & Customer Care

  • Stakeholder Transparency: Present a highly professional appearance and demeanor, communicating clearly with customers about work completed.
  • Inclusive Conduct: Make daily operational decisions with the College's interests in mind, demonstrating inclusivity, openness, transparency, civility, and respect.

Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • High school diploma
  • Active WHMIS and First Aid certifications required
  • Minimum of two years related work experience
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Equipment operation including: Skid Steer, Heavy Equipment Operator, Forklift, as a minimum
  • Apprenticeship training would be considered an asset
  • Carpentry skills would be considered an asset
  • Ability to work independently and/or as a member of a team
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrates reasoning and decision making skills
  • Demonstrates above average time and stress management skills
  • Demonstrates accuracy and attention to detail

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends/evening/early mornings / on call for snow removal
  • Current Criminal Reference check with a Vulnerable Sector Check that is free of any offenses.
  • Must respect and actively promote health and safety policies.
  • Heavy Equipment & Machinery Operation: Requires the physical coordination and valid certification to safely maneuver a variety of complex campus machinery, including Skid Steers, Forklifts, and associated heavy equipment operators, inside tight or busy campus layouts.
  • Adverse Environmental Exposure: Involves routine work conducted outdoors under harsh, volatile Western Canadian weather conditions—particularly during high-stress winter storms requiring prompt physical snow and ice removal.
  • Hazardous Materials Handling: Requires the safe handling, transport, and structural isolation of active biological waste and toxic materials in precise accordance with Bio-Hazard and WHMIS handling protocols.
  • Physical Exertion & Stature: Demands the stamina to execute manual labor over extended shifts, which involves lifting heavy furniture, tools, or building materials, alongside routine bending, stretching, and physical manipulation of structures.
  • Schedule Flexibility: While operating primarily within a standard facility framework, the position explicitly mandates the willingness to work non-standard flexible hours, including unexpected evenings and weekends, to address emergent winter weather hazards or critical building systems failures.
  • Safety Gear Compliance: Requires mandatory adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE) systems and institutional health policies to protect self and others during active structural adjustments or utility construction aid.
