As employees, we joined the City to make a difference in the community. The Burnaby Promise sets out the responsibilities of every employee, every day, in every decision we make. It describes the standards that every employee should strive to meet when interacting with Burnaby residents, external and internal clients, and City colleagues. It gives us the tools to check our actions, particularly in times of conflict or challenge. When every employee lives by the Principles and Commitments in this document, we will collectively create a City we all want to be in, that fosters employee engagement, strengthens our relationships, and better serves our community through service excellence.

This position works in the Building Inspection organizational unit. This is intermediate level building inspectional and regulatory work. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include high school graduation supplemented by completion of a recognized carpentry trade apprenticeship and / or graduation from an Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Building Technology, plus sound experience as a Plan Checker 2 and / or Building Inspector 1; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the standards, codes, by-laws, acts and regulations related to the work. Ability to interpret and enforce by-laws, regulations, plans and specifications impartially and tactfully; recognize faulty construction or hazardous conditions pertaining to structural stability of small industrial, commercial and residential construction; operate office equipment and computer applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Geographic Information System, Energov Permitting and Land Management System). Skill in the use of a variety of tools and equipment related to the work performed. A successful completion of the Building Officials Association of BC (BOABC) Level 2 Exam(s) and a valid Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia are required.
