Job description

The individual will be working with the Markel Canada Data Analytics team to primarily support data requests, data queries, script development, analysis for reporting tools and development of dashboards in PowerBI.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with cross functional teams across the whole of the business and to work with external system providers.

The Opportunity

Markel Canada Data Operations is looking for a fun and talented person to work with its expert and data smart team. Markel Canada is a leading liability insurance company with various specialty products. The Data Ops goal is to help the business make good choices with dashboards and other tools that show Markel’s business story and give insights to enhance the business results.

This is a new role in the data team, to help implement the Canadian Data Operations plan and to deliver innovative BI Products. This role offers a great chance to build an exciting career in data analytics for the insurance market.

What you'll be doing :

  • Lead and facilitate research and assessment of new Data related solutions and integration approaches and technologies for potential use within the organization.
  • Lead, influence, and engage with business representatives to scope, define and document insurance product reporting requirements.
  • Empower our internal clients on the usage of our current BI Tools. Work with technical teams to determine the best way to present data to our internal clients.
  • Participate in end-to-end requirements, design, implementation, testing and production data request initiatives in integration projects and reporting tools enhancements.
  • Contributes and reviews technical specifications ensuring requirements are accurately translated for new data solutions or changes to existing solutions. Hands-on data mapping and defining transformational logic is required.
  • Maintain and create new queries, SQL scripts, Store Procedures, SQL Views, SSRS Reports and thorough understanding of current application DB structures and limitations.
  • Maintain and create Data Lake ETL Rules, Data Models, Data Mining activities of current Data Lake application structures and limitations.
  • Hold vendors accountable for solution designs, analyzing design alignment and integration to existing workflows and systems.
  • Work with IT, Infrastructure Team, External Technical Teams / Developers, and business colleagues to address queries on requirements, bugs, and resolutions. Investigate and present gap analysis findings to audiences of various backgrounds (both technical, non-technical and managerial)
  • Be a reliable point of contact for change management processes and initiatives assigned, and highlight escalate risks to appropriate team(s) (Local Senior Business Technology Members, Finance Team, IT infrastructure, Product / Project Manager, Vendor, Steering Committee)
  • Breakdown business requirements to manageable pieces that can be delivered in increments, through various artefacts such as BRD, FRD, and User stories for Agile framework projects, reporting to Product / Project Manager(s) as appropriate.
  • Support and Guide users through UAT preparation, execution and coordination for new enhancements where appropriate.
  • Provide Production user support, training, documentation, and troubleshooting; explaining highly technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders in a concise manner.
  • Provide secondary support to BAU team members on other initiatives that may require knowledge of application data – e.g. data migration, testing and deployment of system solutions.

Our must haves :

  • Advanced knowledge of SQL and database concepts . Must be able to write and modify complex SQL queries and scripts in SSMS.
  • Experience with Azure Databricks, develop and maintain ETL and Data Quality Processes. As well as Develop and Maintain Data Models to support data analysis and reporting.
  • Advanced knowledge of Experience with MS Power BI . Must be able to build Analysis Services reporting models. Develop visual reports, Paginated Reports, KPI scorecards, and dashboards using Power BI desktop. Should have the ability of making DAX queries, excellence in using advanced-level calculations, develop tabular and multidimensional models that are compatible with data warehouse standards.
  • Working knowledge of Python, Pandas, R, YAML, XML. AVRO, JSON experience is an asset.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps Boards, support the Change request and document work items in Epic, features and User Stories.
  • Analytical thinking for translating data into informative reports and visuals.
  • Competent IT skills with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications – Expert in MS Excel.
  • 8 years + experience in data analytics and reporting, SDLC / System implementation, and vendor relationship management is required.
  • Strong numeracy and logical analytical skills, with a structured approach to problem solving. Financial analysis skills in a financial setting will be considered an asset.
  • Proactively contribute to, lead and influence business changes of varying complexities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various levels of management, staff and external clients.
  • Ability to document complex concepts in a clear and concise manner; expert in conveying complex concepts to non-technical teams, but speak to a technical audience when needed.
  • Prior hands-on participation in Production support chain, Tier-2 or 3 level triage experience.
  • Educated to degree level (Math, Business, Computer Science or Information Systems), or equivalent analytical work experience.
  • Bilingualism and Financial Industry experience would be considered an asset
