Job Purpose
The Construction HSE Advisor is responsible for ensuring that all site leadership and workers are aware of their responsibilities and obligations under the OH&S Act and regulations. Construction HSE Advisors are competency champions for the company ensuring that all site leadership is performing their role as it relates to competency.
Responsibilities
- Display a commitment to Waiward’s incident-free vision, values, and culture.
- Know, understand, communicate, and ensure compliance with safety regulations (Occupational Health and Safety Act), safety policies / procedures of both the company and client.
- Facilitate a safe work culture and work with supervision to ensure the team is adhering to current safety policies and regulations.
- Comprehension of legal liability of the role - ensure site leadership apply the standards for safe working conditions and employees are arriving fit for work.
- Identify needs and providing or arranging for crew safety training.
- Participation / coaching leaders in daily “toolbox” talks and weekly safety meetings.
- Lead safety / incident investigations and reviews.
- Document all incidents and other required safety reports.
- Conduct training sessions when required (fall protection, respirator fit test, JLG, forklift, etc.).
- Positively encourage and participate in a “Near Miss Reporting”.
- Work with supervision on assessing competency and capability of tradespersons.
- Coach leadership to ensure that workers have required certifications and training to meet our company, the client, and OH&S policies and standards.
- Conduct site safety orientation for new hires on all projects and manage documentation accordingly.
- Prior to work commencing, assist supervision in completing safe work plans, hazardous work permits, and other permits as described in the procedural letters.
- Coach leadership in creating an inclusive employee culture and adherence to employee relation policies and procedures to ensure a respectful and inclusive work environment.
- Coach leadership on modified / restricted duty employees.
- Conduct site assessments with site leadership to determine hazards and assist in identification and implementation of appropriate controls.
- Establish inspection schedules and participate and or lead all job site inspections, assign corrective action and report back to employees on inspection findings.
- Lead all investigations and provide corrective actions recommendations to leadership. Document correction actions in the investigation report.
- Ensure all employee documentation is submitted to Human Resources. This is inclusive to new hire orientation package, completed competency reviews, training and certifications.

Working Conditions
The incumbent is required to work from the site trailers in an office and field environment with moderate noise. The job may require the incumbent to walk stairs, climb ladders, work at heights and in confined spaces; be outside in inclement weather (slippery surfaces and cold); carrying objects, driving, and being exposed to normal office and field routines. This position will have also access to Owner provided camp facilities.
Physical Requirements
The incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as : viewing a computer terminal for extended periods of time; and extensive reading. The incumbent is also required to stand and sit for extended periods of time and will require good physical attributes for walking on uneven ground, climbing, confined space entry, limited lifting, and sitting.
