As a Mechanic with Norfolk County, you’ll service, diagnose, and repair a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment that support essential municipal operations. Your technical expertise will help keep roads, emergency services, and community services running safely and reliably for residents every day.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform major and minor service and repairs and maintenance on all County vehicles and equipment at the garage or on-site as required.
  • Service, maintain, diagnose, repair, drive and operate all Norfolk County fleet vehicles and equipment, including, but not limited to, backhoes, loaders, road graders, fire apparatus, ambulances/stretchers, single and tandem axle trucks, and pick-up trucks.
  • Travel to various locations to perform service calls and determine problems with breakdowns.
  • Provide specific list of parts required to be purchased in order to complete assigned work orders.
  • Respond to after-hours service calls as required.
  • Complete all required paperwork and reports including work orders, daily logbooks, and other documentation required by the Ministry of Transportation.
  • Perform Ministry of Transportation safety inspections and reports on required equipment.
  • Perform emission and maintenance inspections and reports on required equipment.
  • Inspect accident damage and provide Garage Supervisor with reports, as required.
  • Assist in the development of various maintenance schedules.
  • Perform minor maintenance, cleaning and housekeeping duties in the garage and work yard.
  • Refuel vehicles and equipment as required.
  • Ensure all Health and Safety policies and procedures are followed.
  • Has purchasing authority as required according to Policy #’s EBS-02 and EBS-06.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Grade 12 plus an additional two year, up to three-year Community College program in auto mechanic studies, or equivalent.
  • Current Ontario Government Certificate of Qualifications:
    • Truck and Coach Technician (310T)
    • Automotive Service Technician (310S)
    • Heavy Equipment Technician (421A)
    • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT)
  • Valid DZ or AZ driver’s license is considered an asset.
  • Mechanic Class I:
    • Must hold one (1) of the Ontario Government Certificate of Qualifications listed above AND over three (3) years’ experience which can be gained through apprenticeship.
    • Note: The successful candidate will be enrolled into an apprenticeship to receive the certificate they do not possess.
  • Mechanic Class II:
    • Must hold two (2) of the Ontario Government Certificate of Qualifications listed above and over four (4) years’ experience which can be gained through apprenticeship.
  • Mechanic Class III:
    • Must hold three (3) of the Ontario Government Certificate of Qualifications listed above and over five (5) years’ experience which can be gained through apprenticeship.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Utilize experience to diagnose complex situations as relates to vehicles and equipment to ensure accurate and timely repairs.
  • Must be able to use manufacturer’s diagnostic software.
  • Computer expertise in corporate standard software (Microsoft Office, WorkTech Pearl) and department specific software to data search and entry and to create and modify documents.
  • Valid Ontario G driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle including the ability to provide a drivers abstract when requested during the recruitment process.
  • Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
