Job Summary

The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) at Dalhousie University, through its work leading the Transforming Climate Action (TCA) program with partner institutions Memorial University, University Laval, and the University of Quebec at Rimouski, is playing important roles in the development of Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) in Canada and internationally. mCDR in Canada is rapidly developing as a proposed method to mitigate climate change and contribute to Canada’s net zero goals.

Reporting to the OFI Scientific Director, the Program Officer, Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR), will contribute to, coordinate and help direct OFI and TCA’s current research programs related to mCDR and drives initiatives to develop future opportunities for additional value-aligned programs and collaborations across the mCDR sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide structure and organizational guidance throughout the research process, serving as the primary contact amongst TCA researchers as well as with established and future research, community, industry, non-profit, and government partners.
  • Build and maintain partnerships, ensuring programs are focused on sector needs and delivering value to partners and stakeholders. Organize and lead research and partner meetings, workshops, and convenings, consolidate key takeaways and lead follow-up actions and deliverables.
  • Design and execute select research activities in the space. Contribute to collaborative manuscripts to communicate findings from the programs. Present on mCDR and TCA research to partners and interested parties as subject matter expert.
  • Identify and lead proposal development for new partnership opportunities and funding opportunities for both national and international. Identify pathways to elevate research and translate findings across sectors and disciplines.
  • Facilitate and coordinate research projects, ensuring the delivery of actionable research results. Provide organizational and administrative support to ensure the program’s smooth operation.
  • Assist researchers and highly qualified personnel (HQP) with research budget tracking, proposal preparation, and reporting and accountability requirements for co-funders; professional development and training opportunities for students, postdoctoral researchers, HQP, and future recruitment.

Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work from within Nova Scotia) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Oceanography or related field with a minimum of three to five years’ experience in a closely related field, or PhD in Oceanography or a related field.
  • Experience and exposure to marine carbon dioxide removal (or an adjacent field) as well as experience working with interdisciplinary researchers in project coordination, community member engagement, and/or research program management.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage diverse community members and practitioners (scientists, policymakers, Indigenous community members, industry).
  • Proven ability to organize meetings, workshops, and collaborative processes.
  • Strategic thinker with an ability to identify opportunities and support proposal development.
  • Comfortable working independently and in team settings across multiple organizations.
