Job Purpose

The PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) Programmer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining automated systems and industrial control processes using PLCs.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI programs for automated systems.
  • Integrate sensors, drives, HMIs, robotics, and communication networks into new and existing machinery.
  • Diagnose electrical, control, and automation issues and implement timely, effective solutions.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, including electrical schematics, PLC / HMI programs, network diagrams, and safety system records.
  • Collaborate closely with maintenance, engineering, and production teams to support continuous improvement and automation upgrades.
  • Configure, program, and troubleshoot robotic systems, including basic setup and operational support.
  • Optimize and enhance existing automation systems to improve reliability, efficiency, and uptime.
  • Plan and manage automation projects, ensuring milestones, timelines, and budgets are met.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance to ensure optimal performance of automation and control systems.
  • Provide training to maintenance and production personnel on new equipment, system updates, and operational changes.
  • Ensure all equipment and automation processes meet safety requirements and support ongoing safety enhancements.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
  • Follow Health and Safety rules and regulations.
  • Must follow Good Manufacturing Practices, Food Safety, and Food Defense guidelines.
  • Comply with all Company policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Industrial Technology, or related field.
  • Electrical licence 442A or 309A considered an asset.
  • 3+ years experience in PLC programming and troubleshooting.
  • Hands‑on experience with major PLC platforms – Allen‑Bradley, Siemens, Omron, Schubert.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming languages such as Ladder Logic, ST, FBD.
  • Experience with robotics programming or basic robot handling (Fanuc).
  • Strong understanding of industrial networks – EtherNet / IP, Profinet, Modbus, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of VFDs, motors, servo systems, sensors, and machine safety system.
  • Sound knowledge of PID controller concept, programming and tuning for motion applications.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Understanding of safety relays, safety PLC, safety devices of category 4.
  • Knowledge of modern automation trends (IIoT, data collection, smart sensors) is a plus.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to work under pressure during breakdowns.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Working Conditions

  • Compliant with ventilation, cleanliness, space, lighting and temperature.
  • Physical Requirements

  • Standing involved.
  • May repeat the same movement.
  • Often wear safety equipment such as gloves, hair nets, steel‑toed safety shoes / boots and beard nets.
  • Ability to bend or twist the body.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
