We are a part of Heidelberg Cement Group, one of the worlds largest building materials companies.

Heidelberg Materials is developing North Americas first full-scale carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) solution for the cement industry at its Edmonton plant. Up to one million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) will be captured, transported by pipeline, and permanently sequestered in deep saline storage formations. This project will include a 120MW combined heat and power facility that will provide the heat required for the process as well as producing enough electricity for both the new and existing plant as well as exporting excess low emission electricity to the grid. This project will be a critical component that will allow Heidelberg Materials and our customers to reduce emissions in the built environment and support net-zero carbon concrete offerings.

Heidelberg Materials is seeking a CCUS Lead Operations Specialist for this new facility based at our Cement Plant in Edmonton, AB.

This position will assist in building, training, and leading the plant operations team, as well as ensuring that the facility design and construction meet the highest standards of safety, operability, and reliability. This position reports to the Operations Manager Edmonton CCUS, is a key member of the project team, and will support all phases of the project and commercial operations.

What Youll Get to Do:

  • Support and assist pilot plant operations as required to meet the requirements of the test plans.

  • Develop Operations & Maintenance systems, practices, and procedures.

  • Review project documentation that includes technical recommendations, work packages, and commissioning documents.

  • Participate in PHAs, model reviews, and reliability and maintenance studies, as well as system scoping as required.

  • Support the development of the operator training program and ongoing competency verifications using a variety of tools including a high-fidelity plant simulator.

  • Develop standard operating procedures for the facility.

  • When operational this position will be responsible for the operation of the carbon capture and combined heat and power facility and will monitor, control, and coordinate the operations and maintenance of those units, and will develop and maintain a productive, efficient work environment with the operations group.

Who Were Looking For:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the operation of energy facilities, with at least 5 years in an operations coordination role.

  • First Class Power Engineer Certificate in Alberta or a minimum Second Class Power Engineering Certificate currently progressing to obtain their First Class Power Engineering Certificate.

  • Keen understanding of the importance of safety in the workplace.

  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships within a dynamic team.

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and technical complexity coupled with flexibility and adaptability.

  • Have exceptional interpersonal skills, teamwork ability, and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills.

  • Competence with computer-based programs and tools.

  • Extensive knowledge of large compressors, gas turbine/generators, heat recovery steam generators, cooling towers and heat rejection equipment, water treatment systems, amine sweetening systems, and similar equipment is an asset.

What we have to offer:
