Interested candidates are required to complete the following on-line application to the attention of : The Recruitment Team. This position will use a blended learning format consisting of pool instruction, face-to-face instruction in-class, and online learning.

Thank you for your interest in the Teaching – Night School Aquatics Leadership Program with the York Region District School Board. The Aquatic Leadership Program is a joint venture between the York Region District School Board, Continuing Education Services and the City of Vaughan. The qualified teacher will deliver Grade 12 Recreation and Healthy Active Living Leadership (PLF4M1), while preparing students to acquire their Lifesaving Society's National Lifeguard Certification and Lifesaving Society's Swim and Lifesaving Instructor qualifications. Course Expectations will be assessed and evaluated using Standard Lifesaving Society evaluation criteria and the Ontario Ministry of Education Expectations. An examiner from the Lifesaving Society will evaluate the aquatic skills required for swim and instructor certification.

Pool instruction and face-to-face instruction will occur on specifically scheduled Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 : 00 p.m. to 8 : 00 p.m. at the Dufferin Clark Community Centre. There will be one Saturday online class from 9 : 00 a.m. to 12 : 00 p.m. on May 3rd. The final in-pool exam will be held on Monday, June 16th at 5 : 00 p.m. to 8 : 00 p.m. The remaining curriculum expectations will be delivered through online instruction when face-to-face instruction is not required.

Please Note : For the Night School Aquatic Leadership Program teachers must be qualified to teach Health and Physical Education at the Intermediate / Senior division and must be a Certified Lifeguard and Swim Instructor. Teachers must also be available for all pool, face-to-face and online sessions. The successful candidate must complete facility staff training as required by the Ontario Public Pool Association.

Aquatics Leadership Program – Part 2 consists of the following courses :

  • Secondary School Grade 12 Credit - Recreation and Healthy Active Living Leadership – PLF4M1
  • Lifesaving Society's National Lifeguard Certification
  • Lifesaving Society's Swim and Lifesaving Instructor Certification

Major Responsibilities :

  • Designing, planning, implementing, and evaluation of curriculum / program.
  • Teaching Recreation and Healthy Active Living Leadership – PLF4M1, National Lifeguarding Certification (Lifesaving Society) and Swim, Emergency First Aid and Lifesaving Instructor (Lifesaving Society) Certification courses
  • Developing and maintaining an equitable and inclusive learning environment.
  • Utilizing e-learning tools e.g. : BrightSpace by D2L, Adobe Connect, Turnitin, etc. to deliver online curriculum
  • Collecting and reporting of student achievement data.
  • Maintaining a safe school / class (face-to-face, pool and online) environment.
  • Ongoing communication with staff and parents / guardians.
  • Reporting to e-Learning Principal.
  • Supervision of students as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Education, Experience and Qualifications :

  • Qualfied Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT)
  • Intermediate / Senior Physical and Health Education qualifications

    Important Information for CUPE 1734 Members :

    LA.11.7 Those twelve (12) month employees filling vacancies as a result of their applying to a job posting are to remain twelve (12) months at their position. Ten (10) month employees are to remain in their position until the end of the school year. This requirement can be waived with permission from the Superintendent responsible for Human Resource Services.     Additional Information - Community and International Education Services (CIES) :

    The Community and International Education Services (CIES) hiring protocol allows teachers to teach and / or administrate for two CIES sessions per school year and / or administrate one term / session at a time. Candidates will only be allowed to teach and / or administrate a third session on an emergency basis in consideration of demand in a particular subject area, course or administrative position. A session is defined as the time needed to deliver a 4 – 6 week program (approximately 110 hours for credit courses) or the equivalent. CIES sessions include positions at e-Learning, Night School, Summer School, International Languages Secondary Credit and Elementary Non-Credit Programs and Summer Institute.

    As a condition of employment , successful candidates will be required to submit a current original Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) from the police jurisdiction in which they reside prior to commencing employment with the Board. The PVSC documents are only valid if issued within the last six months. Candidates are not advised to obtain this document prior to an offer of employment. It is the candidates responsibility to provide the results to the Board upon instruction.
