Job description

Visuals Editor, Toronto

The Canadian Press is seeking a full-time Visuals Editor in Toronto to help oversee video production, package photo / video content and handle photo editing. We are looking for someone with a background in visual journalism and strong news judgment, along with a demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple ongoing tasks. The successful candidate will be skilled in video editing software such as Adobe Premiere, as well as photo editing programs including Photoshop and Photo Mechanic. They must have a good aptitude for learning new technology.

This position involves shift work including weekends, nights and holidays.

Responsibilities :

  • Monitor press conferences, suggest clips / quotes for video and provide timecode / direction for video editors.
  • Review video material gathered by Canadian Press reporters and photographers, and identify key quotes / timecodes / footage.
  • Write / edit video caption metadata information.
  • Review produced videos created by Canadian Press staff and oversee suggested edits.
  • Pursue photos and video from a variety of sources, including social media, to accompany stories for both the wire and our online feeds.
  • Effectively follow news tips and generate visual story ideas.
  • Edit the feed of images from Canadian Press’ staff and freelance photographers, along with photos from other sources, for our newspapers, online subscribers and other clients. This includes captioning photos in proper Canadian Press style, cropping and toning of images where required.
  • Remote edit live-from-camera photos from photographers on assignment.
  • Arrange photo and video coverage of events in Canada or those events from abroad that would be of specific Canadian interest.
  • Create and curating photo and video products online.

Skills :

  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under deadline.
  • Strong knowledge of videography and video editing processes.
  • Strong knowledge of photography and digital camera equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of computers and imaging, networking and transmission software.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong news judgment and knowledge of all types of news : sports, general, political.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team.
  • Fluency in both official languages would be an asset.
  • Requirements :

  • University, Community college / CEGEP program in photojournalism.
  • 3-5 years of experience working in a daily news environment; experience with a news agency would be an asset.
  • Must be able to work unpredictable hours, weekends, off-hours as news coverage demands.

Elle doit avoir une bonne aptitude à apprendre les nouvelles technologies.

    Le poste prévoit des quarts de travail, incluant le week-end, la nuit et les jours fériés.

    Responsabilités :

  • Surveiller les conférences de presse, suggérer des clips / citations pour la vidéo et fournir un code temporel / des instructions aux monteurs vidéo.
  • Examiner le matériel vidéo recueilli par les reporters et photographes de La Presse Canadienne, et identifier les citations, les codes temporels et les séquences clés.
  • Rédiger / modifier les métadonnées des légendes vidéo.

  • Rechercher des photos et des vidéos provenant de diverses sources, y compris les médias sociaux, pour accompagner les articles publiés sur le fil et en ligne.
  • Suivre efficacement le déroulement des nouvelles et générer des idées de reportage visuel.
  • Réviser le fil d'images provenant du personnel de La Presse Canadienne et des photographes pigistes, ainsi que des photos provenant d'autres sources, pour nos journaux, nos abonnés en ligne et autres clients.
