    About the role

    Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Associate Director, Process Development to join our dynamic Testing team.

    The  Testing team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by delivering accurate and timely results on donors, patients and products, ensuring the highest standards of safety and quality in our products and services.

    In this role, you will be responsible for directing the development and monitoring of the Donor and Patient Testing service portfolio, Transfusion Medicine & Immunohematology (TMI). The portfolio spans a broad test menu including routine immunohematology, genotyping, national reference testing services (immunohematology and platelet), crossmatch and perinatal testing. The individual will be implementing innovative enhancements to increase the effectiveness of lab processes, improve the efficiency of service delivery and enhance processes for sample receipt and management.

    You will continually assess the Blood Banking industry for Best Practices and innovations in technology, automation and emerging process and technologies for all processes related to Donor and Patient Testing. You will also ensure that Best Practices are implemented consistently across all Canadian Blood Services’ testing sites and provide project management leadership for change implementation and act as a resource to Donor and Patient Testing Laboratories and Head Office staff.

    Formula for success

  • Together with the Associate Director, Testing Operations, you will direct the development and monitoring of Donor and Patient Testing performance measures for the Transfusion Medicine & Immunohematology (TMI) group and develop innovative enhancements to increase the efficiency of Laboratory processes and improve turnaround time for result reporting for donor and patient testing samples. Collaborate with local lab site managers and the Associate Director Testing Operations as needed to review monthly metrics i.e. Quality Management Reports and Type 1 / Type2 error reports.
  • Analyze Donor and Patient Testing key performance indicators for process improvement opportunities and resource optimization.Recommend enhancements to Donor and Patient Testing processes to Supervisor based on analysis of key performance indicators and other data.
  • Assess the process for sample receipt and preparation of samples to ensure suitability for transfusion medicine-related immunohematology testing procedures. Assess workflows to ensure that they are operationally appropriate and review opportunities for improvement for both Patient and Donor Testing. Provide leadership to Testing staff in the field, encouraging and promoting innovation and process improvement ideas from all staff levels.
  • Regularly research Blood Banking industry for Best Practices and innovations in technology and automation and emerging processes and technologies. Ensure that Best Practices are implemented consistently across all Donor and Patient Testing sites.
  • Identify changes in regulatory requirements for testing and emerging threats to the blood supply, analyze impact to Canadian Blood Services’ Patient Testing and suggest options for strategic planning.
  • Develop and maintain credible and effective relationships with internal and external customers, vendors, contractors and other agencies involved in Donor and Patient Testing activities.
  • In conjunction with Donor and Patient Testing staff at each site, assist to develop or review Standard Operating Procedures for new procedures, tests or technologies.
  • Support senior management and Medical in the research and preparation of position papers.
  • Direct the project management activities for change implementation at the Donor and Patient Testing sites and act as a resource to Donor and Patient Testing Laboratories and Head Office staff (i.e. Enterprise Project Management Office (ePMO), Strategic Planning etc.).
  • Direct and lead the project management activities within TMI, including the management of the human and financial resources.
  • Lead project teams, comprised of Donor and Patient Testing and other Canadian Blood Services’ staff, to implement approved Change Requests for new processes, testing assays, facility expansions and technological change.
  • Develop Change Requests and associated documentation to support process improvement, automation, technological change and new tests, in conjunction with other Testing staff.
  • Identify the work instruction requirements for new processes, testing assays and technologies and lead the SOP development team in the preparation, approval and implementation of the new and / or revised documents.
  • Work in conjunction with the Validation, Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs and Equipment Services Groups to provide technical support for the development and execution of equipment qualification protocols for the implementation of new technologies or procedures.
  • Facilitate the transfer and implementation of new technology from development to operations, and between Donor and Patient Testing sites.
  • Evaluate and report on the process effectiveness of implemented changes.
  • Desired education and skills

  • Post secondary level education in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution.
  • B.Sc. in Laboratory Science or ART in Transfusion Science or equivalent experience is required.
  • Eligibility for licensure with the College of Medical Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) in Immunohematology and / or the College of Medical Lab Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA) in Haematology or Transfusion Science is required.
  • Specialization in Transfusion Science (STS) and / or Specialist in Blood Banking Technology, SBB (ASCP) Certification will be considered an asset.
  • Extensive experience and in-depth knowledge and understanding of TMI testing is required.
  • Interest in exploring and applying innovative technologies to TMI testing required.
  • Strong communication skills in English are essential.
  • Five to Ten (5-10) years of experience in clinical transfusion medicine.
  • Strong leadership acumen to motivate and guide team members to execute strategic priorities and implement project deliverables.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to write and present business cases.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
