Job description

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) New Graduate Opportunities

PHSA’s New Grad Program provides new LPN graduates with the opportunity to use their nursing practice skills acquired through education and training and enter into a nursing specialty working in one of pediatrics, oncology, or adult mental health nursing.

All new employees who are new graduates and hired as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) will be placed into a regular or temporary position, with a minimum part-time-employee (FTE) to full-time hours for the first six months of employment.

Nursing shifts  are days, evenings, and nights, usually 8 or 12 hours, with shifts varying by unit / department.

This posting covers all “New Grad” opportunities for all locations and facilities within Provincial Health Services Authority. Opportunities for New Grad LPNs are at the following areas / locations :

Adult Mental Health Programs :

  • Locations include : Coquitlam, Surrey, Chilliwack, Prince George, Oliver, Kamloops, Victoria and Nanaimo
  • Vancouver
  • Regional Cancer Centres : Abbotsford, Kelowna, Prince George, Surrey, Vancouver and Victoria

BC Children’s Hospital

  • Sunny Hill Health Centre, Vancouver
  • What you’ll do :

  • Establishes therapeutic relationships with patients / clients and families.
  • Assess and identify patient / clients’’ and families’ actual potential strengths and limitations using physiological, psychological, social-cultural and spiritual needs by performing duties such as completing a nursing history and performing a head to toe assessment.
  • Reviews and interprets the established nursing plan of care, provides nursing care and assists patients / clients with hygiene, grooming, toileting needs, ambulation and mobility, and feeding, and performs procedures such as dressing changes and medication administration to assigned patients according to established policies and procedures.
  • Follows diagnostic treatment plans including collecting specimens and preparing and caring for patients / clients undergoing diagnostic tests, examinations, or procedures.
  • Monitors status of patients / client’s in relation to anticipated outcomes. Evaluates the effectiveness of nursing interventions by comparing actual outcomes to anticipated outcomes. Reports unanticipated changes and concerns to the nurse-in-charge and / or other members of the healthcare team.
  • Maintain complete and accurate computerized and paper records through methods such as tracking results / consults documentation, and inputting data and documentation in accordance with established procedures and policies appropriately on the client’s health record.
  • Transports and / or accompanies patients who require assistance to other areas / departments for tests or procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • What you bring :

  • Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Current full practicing licensure with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
