The Opportunity
School District No. 5 (Southeast Kootenay) seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and innovative leader with expertise in curriculum, instruction, and assessment from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12.
Must have a strong commitment to equity, inclusivity, community engagement, and fostering positive relationships.
Experience in implementing innovative strategies, collaborating with diverse stakeholders, and supporting lifelong learning for educators and staff with a focus on priority populations (Indigenous, Children and Youth in Care and Students with Diverse Abilities).
This position aligns with the District's vision, mission, motto, theory of action, and goals. Reporting directly to the Superintendent, the Director of Instruction Curriculum & Assessment will assist in fulfilling the general and specific responsibilities outlined for the Superintendent under the School Act and Board policy.

Located in the stunning southeast corner of British Columbia, School District No. 5 (Southeast Kootenay) serves vibrant communities, including Cranbrook, South Country (Baynes Lake, Grasmere, Elko, Galloway, Jaffray), Fernie, Sparwood, and Elkford. This region is renowned for its breathtaking mountain scenery, pristine lakes, and abundant outdoor recreation opportunities such as fishing, hiking, skiing, cycling, and golfing.
The District benefits from a diverse economy supported by mining, forestry, tourism, and small industries. Cranbrook is home to the College of the Rockies, while Fernie boasts the rapidly growing Fernie Alpine Resort.
The District encompasses 18 schools, including one online school and five French Immersion schools to serve the approximately 6,000 students within our communities. We provide transportation to over 2,000 students. The District employs approximately 1600 staff, with nine members of the Board to guide and support our district initiatives.

Position Responsibilities :
The Director of Instruction Curriculum & Assessment will lead and support the following areas :
Framework for Enhancing Student Learning (FESL) :
Collaborate with the Senior Management Team and district stakeholders to develop, implement, and oversee the FESL, ensuring alignment with the district's educational and operational goals.
Support school principals in creating and managing school improvement plans that reflect the district's vision and objectives, ensuring consistency with the FESL.
Identify and address discrepancies between district policies and the FESL, providing actionable recommendations to the Senior Management Team.
Partner with principals to design and implement a robust monitoring and reporting system to track the progress and effectiveness of school improvement plans.
Organizational Management
Within areas of responsibility, demonstrates effective organizational skills, resulting in compliance with all legal, ministerial and Board mandates and timelines and in adherence to Superintendent directives.
Contributes, in a team-oriented, collaborative and cohesive manner, to a District culture that facilitates positive results, effectively handles emergencies and deals with crisis situations
K-12 Curriculum & Assessment
Oversee and evaluate the effective implementation of curriculum, education transformation initiatives, and inclusive learning practices.
Support evidence-based assessment practices and accountability for student achievement.
Foster conditions to enhance educational opportunities for all students.
Collaborate with principals and the Superintendent to improve instruction and maintain quality standards through classroom visits.
Support school learning commons personnel in achieving student learning outcomes.
Manage locally developed course submissions and monitor approved course implementation.
Promote welcoming, safe, and inclusive learning environments that respect diversity and foster belonging.
Instructional Leadership Practices
Leading initiatives to enhance instructional strategies that drive student achievement and engagement.
Providing mentorship, guidance, and performance reviews for teaching, support, and administrative personnel as assigned by the Superintendent.
Build strong, positive relationships with school staff and gain in-depth familiarity with school programs through regular school and classroom visits.
Designing, coordinating, and delivering professional development programs, workshops, and in-service training to support teaching excellence and career growth.
Acting as a resource and advocate for school improvement, innovation, and professional learning.
Participates as part of the PRDTU joint professional development committee.
Policy & Administrative Procedures
Recommends development and / or revisions of Board policies or administrative procedures to the Superintendent.
Ensures application of Board policies or administrative procedures as required in the performance of duties and interprets policies, procedures, philosophy and programs of the District to principals, staff members, school councils and the community.
Communications and Community Relations
Takes appropriate actions to ensure that open and transparent internal and external communications are developed and maintained in areas of responsibility.
Promotes the vision of the province and the strategic plan of the District, reflecting the values and principles of education transformation.
Ensures that parents and staff members have an acceptable level of satisfaction with the services provided.
Investigates and facilitates the resolution of concerns and conflicts.
Coordinates District scholarship and bursary programs.
Fiscal Responsibility & Relationships
Supervises, evaluates and reviews the performance of staff.
Assists with the preparation and administration of the District operating budget.
Ensures that the assigned financial resources are used efficiently and are within the objectives, policies, plans, and budgets established by the Board.
Ensures the Superintendent is kept informed of current activities and emerging issues of concern.
Provides the Senior Management Team information on all aspects of the Director of Instruction Curriculum & Assessment responsibilities as required.
Develops positive working relationships between and among other members of the District Senior Management Team, principals and vice-principals, etc.
Liaises with social, professional, civic, volunteer and other community agencies and groups as appropriate, including establishment of necessary procedures for referral and cooperative planning with other service to children agencies locally and provincially.
Superintendent and Board Relations
Establishes and maintains positive, professional working relations with the Superintendent.
Honours and facilitates the implementation of the Board's roles and responsibilities as defined in Board policy and encourages staff members to do the same.
Provides the information that the Superintendent requires to perform, in an exemplary manner; the Superintendent's role.

You are an accomplished district leader with deep expertise in enhancing learning across primary, intermediate, and secondary levels within the K-12 education sector.
Holding a Master degree in Educational Leadership or Curriculum, you bring a positive, results-oriented approach to advancing successful initiatives.
Your ability to navigate complex challenges in a high-pressure environment is backed by exceptional communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, making you a dynamic and effective leader.
Qua lifications
Master degree in Educational Leadership or Curriculum
Minimum 10 years' successful experience at various educational levels as a school principal / vice principal or district leader
BC Teaching Certificate
Ability to travel between sites within the district
