Job Details
The Durham District School Board acknowledges that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships, both historic and modern, with the territories upon which our school board and schools are located. Today, this area is home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We acknowledge that the Durham Region forms a part of the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, the Mississauga Peoples and the treaty territory of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. It is on these ancestral and treaty lands that we teach, live and learn.
This statement was co-created in partnership with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island.
The DDSB is seeking a collaborative Legal Counsel. The successful candidate will report to the General Counsel and will have the opportunity to work in a full-service in-house practice that provides strategic legal advice and services to the Director of Education, the Board of Trustees, the Senior Team, managers and school administrators, on a variety of interesting matters including, governance, privacy and freedom of information, education law, human rights, contracts, litigation and labour and employment.
As in-house counsel, the successful candidate will work directly with key client groups in the organization, such as IT and HR, to gain an understanding of client needs and to collaborate on solutions that advance the mission of the DDSB. Capacity and systems building within legal services and across the organization will be an important aspect of the role.
Key Responsibilities
- Assume carriage of privacy & freedom of information and education law matters.
- Contract and policy review and drafting.
- Represent the Board in legal proceedings, including, but not limited to matters before administrative tribunals (eg. HRTO).
- Assist Human Resources in managing grievance arbitrations.
