Job description

Location : Ottawa

Payments Canada underpins the Canadian financial system and economy by owning and operating Canada’s payment clearing and settlement infrastructure, including associated systems, by-laws, rules and standards. Through its national payment systems Lynxand the Automated Clearing Settlement System (ACSS), Payments Canada ensures the safe, secure and efficient movement of billions of dollars in transactions every day. With a mandate to modernize the payments ecosystem, Payments Canada plays a pivotal role in the financial lives of Canadians.

Payments Canada operates as a public purpose not-for-profit organization funded by its members and overseen by a majority-independent board of directors. As a member of the Payments Canada Board, the Independent Director will be responsible for providing strategic oversight and governance. This includes guiding Payments Canada’s modernization agenda, ensuring alignment with stakeholder priorities, and overseeing frameworks for operational and cybersecurity resilience. The Independent Director will work closely with fellow directors to maintain Payments Canada’s position as a trusted steward of Canada’s national payment infrastructure.

The ideal candidate is an experienced leader with expertise in one or more of the following disciplines : government relations, human resources, organizational transformation, cyber security and fraud prevention solution development and management. Integrity, ethical decision-making and a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion are essential. Experience chairing boards or committees is considered an asset.

This is an opportunity to serve in a strategic capacity for an organization at the heart of Canada’s financial ecosystem, with a goal of serving Canadian businesses and enabling global competitiveness. As a board member, you will shape the future of payments infrastructure, ensuring it remains secure, innovative, and inclusive in a rapidly evolving landscape.
