Job description

Power the Future of the Columbia Basin – Join Us as a Millwright

Columbia Basin Trust is seeking four Millwrights to help power the future of the Columbia Basin. The Millwright ensures turbines, governors, auxiliary systems and plant infrastructure are maintained to support the safe and reliable operation of our shared hydroelectric assets with Columbia Power: Waneta Expansion, Brilliant Expansion and Arrow Lakes. As a Millwright, you will demonstrate a strong safety and team-focused approach while working on electrical systems at the hydroelectric facilities.

These are permanent, full‑time roles, initially based in our Castlegar office, with a planned permanent relocation to one of our hydroelectric assets on or before March 2027. In this role, you'll enjoy a collaborative and supportive team environment and the unique lifestyle of the West Kootenay region.

Salary Range: $100,600 – $118,200 annually, plus eligibility for overtime pay.

Under the direction of a Mechanical Crew Lead and reporting to a Plant Supervisor, you will:

  • Champion a strong safety and compliance culture by embedding safety into all tasks, proactively addressing hazards, near misses and unsafe conditions.
  • Perform mechanical inspection, maintenance and repair of turbines, pumps, valves and related equipment, including major overhauls and unit outages.
  • Execute critical safety procedures such as lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry and safe handling of hazardous materials in compliance with environmental standards.
  • Support installation, commissioning and maintenance of mechanical and auxiliary systems (e.g., compressors, HVAC, fire suppression, cooling systems).
  • Carry out precision alignment, vibration analysis, rigging and lifting of large components, along with fabrication and fitting work as required.
  • Complete accurate documentation in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), interpret technical drawings and manuals and maintain up-to-date records and redlines.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by supporting root cause analysis, reliability initiatives and recommending safer, more efficient work practices.

What We're Looking For

  • Red Seal Journeyperson Millwright (Industrial Mechanic).
  • 3 or more years of industrial mechanical maintenance experience, preferably in hydroelectric generation or heavy industry.
  • Demonstrated experience with rotating equipment, pumps/valves, hydraulics/pneumatics and precision alignment.
  • Experience interpreting mechanical drawings and using precision measurement tools (e.g., micrometres, dial indicators).
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

Why Join Us?

  • Impactful Work: Operate hydroelectric facilities that power communities across the Columbia Basin.
  • Great Team: Join a multidisciplinary trades crew who will play a key role in the operations and maintenance at our hydroelectric facilities.
  • Collaborative Culture: Work in a safe, accountable and professional environment with strong, technical support from Engineers.
  • Professional Growth: Mentor crew members and apprentices while accessing training and career development opportunities.
  • Compensation and Benefits: Enjoy competitive compensation and a robust benefits package, featuring generous time‑off provisions with at least 20 paid vacation days, plus an optional earned day‑off program that adds enhanced flexibility to your schedule.
  • Work-Life Balance: Spend more time enjoying the lifestyle, recreation and culture of the West Kootenay region with a 35-hour work week.

Additional Information

  • Location: Based in one of three hydroelectric facilities; travel to other facilities as required. After‑hours support may also be required.
  • This role will have overtime requirements based on operational and planned outage needs.
