Job description

Grounded in safety, quality, and ethics, our experts lead their fields with dedication, a creative spirit, and a vision for growth. We draw from more than 20 technical specialties and are devoted to fostering a community of diverse talents, backgrounds, and expertise.

Join a team that’s naturally committed to the environment.

Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Water Resources Team, in the Environmental Services Business Centre, is seeking a Senior Hydrologist or Water Resources Engineer to join our British Columbia team. This role is intended for a highly experienced professional who provides senior technical oversight, applies sound professional judgment, and is able to independently review and stamp hydrology and water resources deliverables.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Senior Water Resources Team Lead, as well as with an established Senior Hydrologist, to ensure strong integration across water‑related disciplines and consistency in technical approaches and deliverables. Together, this senior group will strengthen technical quality, mentorship, and capability across hydrometrics, hydrologic assessments and modelling, water balances and water management work. This position is focused on guiding and leading technical work, supporting team development, and reinforcing best practices from a senior level.

Preferred office locations are Burnaby, Victoria, or Sidney, British Columbia. Other Stantec offices within British Columbia may also be considered depending on the candidate’s experience and business needs.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Provide senior technical oversight, guidance, and leadership across hydrometrics, hydrologic assessments and modelling, water balances, and water management work for mining and other water‑related sectors.

  • Provide quality review and stamp technical deliverables, including hydrologic reports, water balance documentation, and regulatory or design‑support deliverables.

  • Lead and guide hydrologic assessments and predictive modelling, including selection of appropriate methods, review of assumptions, calibration approaches, interpretation of results, and incorporation of climate change considerations.

  • Provide senior review and technical direction for water balances and water management plans, supporting projects through permitting, operations and closure, primarily for mining but also other sectors as required.

  • Provide senior‑level leadership for hydrometric programs, including monitoring program design, data quality review, QA/QC, interpretation, and reporting of hydrometric and related datasets.

  • Support and guide field programs on an as‑needed basis, including senior oversight or supervision of field installations, inspections, or site activities where experienced technical judgment is required.

  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Water Resources Team Lead and a Senior Hydrologist to strengthen technical integration, consistency, and delivery across the water resources team.

  • Provide technical mentoring to junior and intermediate staff, supporting their technical development, confidence, and professional growth.

  • Act as a senior technical representative in interactions with clients, regulators, and internal teams, and support proposal development, scope reviews, and technical risk management.

  • Promote and champion health, safety, and environmental performance in office and field settings.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Registration as a professional geoscientist or engineer (P.Geo. or P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia.

  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills, including technical information exchange with clients, engineers and scientists, government agencies, as well as non-technical communication to the public.

  • Disciplined approach to project execution and technical excellence in a challenging environment that fosters self-improvement through leadership, mentoring, and a diversity of experience.

  • Leadership in striving to continuously improve technical performance.

Your Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Geoscience, Engineering, or related field is required. Doctorate is considered an asset.

Minimum 13 years related experience in hydrologic assessments and modelling, water management, and water balances.

Experience with GoldSim, R, and hydrological datasets (e.g., ERA5) would be an asset.

Mining experience, including incorporation of climate change effects into hydrologic assessments.

Typical office environment involves working with computers and remaining relatively sedentary. Field work may include exposure to the elements, including inclement weather and rough terrain, and requirements to lift items and equipment up to 50 lbs. Stantec offers a flexible work arrangement for desk-based tasks, combining home-based and office-based time.

This description is not a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that may be required of the employee and other duties, responsibilities and activities may be assigned or may be changed at any time with or without notice.
