Job description

Adecco is currently hiring a full-time Research & Indexing Specialist on behalf of our client.
This is an exciting opportunity for a library, information management, or research professional with experience working in aquatic sciences, fisheries, marine research, or scientific information services. In this role, you will support the maintenance and development of specialized scientific bibliographic resources through indexing, abstracting, research, and information management activities.
You will play a key role in ensuring scientific publications and research outputs are accurately indexed, searchable, and accessible within a globally recognized aquatic sciences database.

  • Pay Rate: $25-45/hour
  • Location: Ottawa, ON
  • Shift: Monday to Friday | 8:00 AM - 4 PM

Responsibilities:
Information Management & Indexing

  • Perform professional indexing activities and accurately enter bibliographic records into the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) database.
  • Complete a minimum monthly indexing target while maintaining quality and accuracy standards.
  • Review publications and assign appropriate subject descriptors, indexing terms, and metadata.
  • Ensure indexing activities are completed in a timely manner to prevent publication backlogs.

Abstracting & Research

  • Create new abstracts and revise existing abstracts for inclusion in the database.
  • Conduct literature searches and research to identify publications requiring indexing.
  • Locate and review Canadian and international publications related to aquatic sciences and fisheries.
  • Verify bibliographic information and ensure database accuracy.

Database Maintenance & Reporting

  • Maintain and update monitoring lists of active and inactive input titles.
  • Review publication sources and recommend additions, removals, or updates as required.
  • Support ongoing database quality assurance and information management initiatives.
  • Prepare annual updates and reports related to monitored publications.

Stakeholder & Committee Support

  • Represent the organization at ASFA Steering Committee meetings, when required.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders involved in scientific information management.
  • Support information-sharing initiatives and best practices related to indexing and research.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master's degree in library and information science (MLIS) is considered a strong asset for librarian-level candidates.
  • Diploma in Library and Information Technology or related field for technical information management roles.
  • Strong research and information retrieval skills
  • Experience with bibliographic databases and indexing standards
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong written communication and editing abilities
  • Ability to analyze scientific and technical publications
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
  • Proficiency with database systems and information management tools
  • Must be legally eligible to work, and reside in Canada
