General Accountability

Responsible for the end‑to‑end strategy, execution, governance, and performance of SGI CANADA’s Managing General Agent (MGA) and Program portfolios. Responsible for ensuring that MGAs and Programs are pursued in a disciplined, risk‑informed, and strategically aligned manner that supports profitable and sustainable growth supports earnings stability and prudent capital management, and strengthens broker and market relationships. Owns the MGA portfolio lifecycle, including go‑to‑market strategy, partner selection, contract authority for MGA agreements, delegated authority governance over underwriting and related authorities, performance management, incentive structures, and ongoing relationship leadership. For Programs, accountable for the strategy, governance, and performance of program business delivered through existing broker partners, including delegated authority oversight and ongoing relationship leadership specific to the Program. Provides strategic leadership and oversight to ensure effective execution, strong controls, and clear accountability across all delegated authority arrangements.

Accountable for the design, placement, implementation, and administration of the corporate reinsurance program for all products, for both SGI CANADA and the Saskatchewan Auto Fund, ensuring appropriate risk transfer, capital protection, and earnings stability. This includes oversight of the corporate reinsurance policies and processes, and recommendations to the CIO and CEO on SGI’s reinsurance program.

Key Accountabilities

MGA and Program Portfolio Strategy

  • Leads the development and execution of SGI CANADA’s MGA and Program strategy, including portfolio objectives, target segments, geographic scope, growth priorities, and entry and exit decisions.

  • Accountable for the top‑ and bottom‑line financial performance of the MGA and Program portfolio, including revenue, profitability, expense management, and performance against approved financial targets.

  • Establishes a disciplined, targeted go‑to‑market approach that aligns with SGI CANADA’s distribution strategy, risk appetite, underwriting expertise, capital considerations, and long‑term corporate strategy.

  • Evaluates prospective MGA and Program opportunities for strategic fit, including ownership structure, line of business expertise, geographic footprint, underwriting performance, operational capability, and alignment with SGI CANADA’s appetite.

  • Ensures MGA and Program strategies and related underwriting practices and offerings are aligned with SGI CANADA’s risk appetite, product strategy, and broader distribution model, working closely with Corporate Underwriting, Product Management, Corporate Broker, and Operations to support profitable growth and manage channel conflict.

  • Provides senior‑level input to executive and Board decisions related to the non-traditional growth strategy, including considerations for the MGAs and Programs portfolio.

  • Monitors market trends, competitive dynamics, regulatory developments, and emerging delegated authority models to inform portfolio strategy and evolution.

Delegated Authority Governance, Risk and Contract Oversight

  • Establishes and maintains a comprehensive delegated authority governance framework applicable to both MGAs and Programs.

  • Holds contract authority for MGA appointments, renewals, material amendments, terminations, and for the approval and governance of Program arrangements delivered through existing broker partners, ensuring appropriate approvals are obtained in accordance with corporate governance requirements.

  • Oversees the evaluation, negotiation, creation, and renewal of MGA and Program agreements, including underwriting authority, claims authority (where applicable), eligibility rules, referral requirements, escalation protocols, and termination provisions.

  • Defines and operationalizes incentive structures within MGA and Program agreements to align partner behaviour with SGI CANADA’s profitability and growth strategic objectives.

  • Establishes and enforces data‑sharing protocols, reporting obligations, and information standards within MGA and Program contracts to support governance, performance monitoring, regulatory compliance, and executive decision‑making.

  • Ensures MGA and Program underwriting and operational practices align with SGI CANADA standards, regulatory requirements, and internal control expectations.

  • Ensures robust audit, review, and compliance processes are in place to confirm adherence to delegated authority, underwriting guidelines, pricing parameters, contractual obligations, and data requirements.

Reinsurance Program Design and Administration

  • Provides leadership and direction on the design, placement, and ongoing administration of SGI CANADA’s corporate reinsurance program.

  • Works with reinsurance brokers to structure programs that optimize net risk exposure, protect capital and solvency, manage earnings volatility, and balance cost efficiency.

  • Oversees reinsurance marketing, contract negotiation, wordings, and renewals.

  • Monitors and evaluates reinsurance program effectiveness and recommends changes based on portfolio evolution, aggregation exposure, and market conditions.

  • Incorporates and communicates larger, industry level concerns and emerging issues to primary underwriting areas and corporate support areas.

Relationship Management and Market Engagement

  • Provides senior‑level strategic and tactical relationship leadership for MGA, Program, and reinsurance partners, including executive engagement, issue escalation, and long‑term partnership alignment.

  • Identifies and cultivates strategic alliances within MGA and Program distribution channels, leveraging opportunities to strengthen relationships with key, strategically aligned broker partners.

  • Serves as SGI CANADA’s primary point of accountability for MGA and Program relationships.

  • Leads and participates in strategic reviews and quarterly business reviews with MGA and Program partners, ensuring performance outcomes, risks, and opportunities are clearly understood and addressed.

  • Builds and maintains strong senior-level relationships with reinsurers and reinsurance brokers, ensuring clear understanding of SGI CANADA’s business, risk profile, and strategic direction.

  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to protect the customer experience and ensure alignment across SGI CANADA’s broader distribution ecosystem.

  • Represents SGI CANADA in relevant industry forums, broker engagements, and market discussions related to MGAs, Programs, delegated authority, and reinsurance.

Performance Management and Portfolio Analytics

  • Establishes and oversees performance management frameworks for MGAs and Programs, including KPIs, scorecards, audit results, and portfolio analytics.

  • Leads analysis of portfolio performance, including profitability, growth, loss trends, retention, underwriting quality, and emerging risks.

  • Works collaboratively with internal stakeholders and partners to support and monitor corrective actions where performance targets, risk thresholds, or strategic objectives are not being met.

  • Partners with Corporate Analytics, Finance, IT, and other stakeholders to ensure appropriate systems, data flows, and controls are in place to support MGA and Program performance monitoring and analysis.

People Leadership

  • Builds a high performing workforce by actively leading human resource activities.

  • Ensures development of divisional succession plans.

  • Builds a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver on strategic and corporate strategies, ensuring integration with employee performance development and career development plans.

Corporate Management

  • Ensures programs and policies are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies.

  • Manages risk in area of authority.

  • Prepares, reviews, manages and/or approves departmental/divisional budgets.

  • Prepares decision requests, decision and/or information items and/or SGI board items.

  • Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility, including development, implementation and managing of program components specific to departmental health and safety requirements.

  • Makes decisions for departmental operations that are efficient, effective and in alignment with strategic direction and priorities.

  • Ensures department and program policies, procedures and guidelines are in compliance with applicable federal and provincial legislation and regulations; implements and evaluates changes to legislation and regulations in area of authority.

  • Establishes and maintains an effective system of internal controls to support reliable financial reporting and compliance in accordance with applicable laws and regulations within the span of control, and communicates the importance of internal controls to staff.

Education and Experience

  • Four-year degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such as Business or Mathematics and Applied Sciences.

  • Twelve years’ experience comprised of eight years leadership experience with progressively challenging responsibility and four years’ experience in technical insurance, statistical, actuarial or a finance position

  • Professional designation from an accredited professional association in finance, accounting, insurance, or actuarial sciences.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of strategy development and execution.

  • Knowledge of the delegated authority business model and related portfolio dynamics.

  • Knowledge of all lines and products of insurance.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of insurance and reinsurance.

  • Ability to communicate, present and market corporate-wide reinsurance needs and related exposure to reinsurance broker and reinsurers.
