About the Role :

The Indigenous Support Teacher provides leadership and support in advancing reconciliation and integrating Indigenous perspectives, histories, and cultures into teaching and learning across the curriculum. The role focuses on fostering inclusive and culturally responsive educational practices to improve educational outcomes for Indigenous students.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Provide culturally responsive classroom and community support for Indigenous students within a Catholic educational setting

Offer leadership in advancing reconciliation within the school community, in alignment with Alberta Education’s priorities and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action

Support classroom teachers in embedding Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, and ways of knowing into curriculum planning and daily instruction

Develop and implement culturally relevant and responsive educational practices that reflect the diverse needs and identities of Indigenous students

Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, families, and community organizations to enhance student learning, belonging, and success

Facilitate professional learning opportunities for staff to build cultural competence and deepen understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary issues

Support Indigenous students through academic, social, and cultural programming that affirms identity and fosters engagement and achievement

Advocate for Indigenous student success by identifying and addressing barriers to equitable education

Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of school and division-level Indigenous education plans and initiatives

  • Work collaboratively with school administration and staff to ensure Indigenous perspectives are included in policies, practices, and decision-making
  • Technical Skills & Qualifications :

    Alberta Teaching Certificate (required)

    Strong knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and perspectives , including the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action

    Experience designing and implementing culturally responsive pedagogy

    Strong collaboration and communication skills

    Experience working with Indigenous students, families, and communities is considered an asset

  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and developing personal cultural competence
  • As part of a commitment to Catholic education for the students of the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education, and as a condition of employment, an individual taking employment within the Division, will undertake to follow, both in and out of your employment with the Division, a lifestyle and deportment in harmony with Catholic Church practices and beliefs which include, among other things, living in harmony with the principles of the Gospel and teachings of the Catholic Church.
