JOB SUMMARY :
The Assistant Curator is responsible for supporting the curatorial and programming needs of the Dunlop Art Gallery unit at RPL. The position is a key member of the unit’s Curatorial Team and will work collaboratively with all team members at Dunlop Art Gallery and across all units at RPL to expand opportunities for the public to engage in the various activities of the Gallery, including exhibitions, programs, publishing and collecting. The Assistant Curator will report to the Director / Curator, Dunlop Art Gallery.
The position provides support with developing and executing exhibition plans, publications, and exhibition-related programs. The position collaborates with Library and programming staff to recommend and execute programs and activities. The Assistant Curator will work collaboratively with customers and community members to ensure Dunlop programming is innovative and responsive to the community’s current and evolving needs. The role researches and stays up to date with trends in curatorial methods and makes recommendations to the Curatorial Team on new acquisitions and exhibitions by Canadian and international artists.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
- In consultation and collaboration with the Director / Curator develops exhibition plans and publications, contributes to exhibition production, and builds relationships with artists, curators, and scholars - regionally, nationally, and internationally; collaborate with and assist the teams responsible for production and / or installation of exhibitions. Coordinating with artists, curators, and scholars, to support Dunlop exhibitions and programming activity.Coordinating the programming activities within the project and annual budget expectations as outlined by the Director / Curator.Coordinating and supporting the production of Dunlop Art Gallery publications as assigned to them.
- Collaborate with other Library and programming staff in the planning and implementation of exhibition-related programs and activities. Evaluate programs and activities through debriefing with appropriate team members and providing recommendations for continued growth. Work closely with other team members and units to ensure the smooth execution of exhibitions and programs; including collaborating with Dunlop staff, such as Curator of Education and Outreach, Preparator, Digital Engagement Coordinator, and Arts Educator; and other RPL units, such as Marketing and Communications, Community Engagement and Programming, and others.Provide support to the curatorial team in drafting press releases, email announcements, or promotional materials to attract visitors to the Gallery and participants for programming.
- Research and propose new acquisitions and in-house exhibitions with critical and rigorous written and oral justifications for input from the Curatorial Team. Assist with preparing grant proposals to secure funding for exhibitions, programs, acquisitions, or conservation. Assist with preparing funding reports to internal and external stakeholders, including provincial and federal arts funders.Ensure all curatorial research and records, exhibition-related information, and documentation are organized and up to date according to Dunlop’s digital filing system.Communicate with artists, collectors, donors, and other institutions regarding potential acquisitions, loans, or partnerships.
- Stay up to date with changing trends in curatorial methods and contemporary artistic practice locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Make recommendations to Curatorial Team based on these trends and research. Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and research in the curatorial field by attending relevant conferences, workshops, and professional development opportunities.Build professional relationships with curators, collectors, and academics within the field of contemporary art and arts programming.Regularly prepare written and oral recommendations to Curatorial Team about how trends and research might impact the exhibition schedule and programming plans.

QUALIFICATIONS :
Schedule Information : This position may include weekend and / or evening work as required. The initial schedule is as follows - Sunday – off, Monday – off, Tuesday 10 am – 4 : 45 pm, Wednesday 10 am – 4 : 45 pm, Thursday 10am - 4 : 45pm, Friday 10 am – 4 : 45 pm, Saturday – off. The initial schedule is subject to change based on operational need; any changes would be made in compliance with collective agreement scheduling articles.
