The Estimator III is accountable for the preparation of labour and material estimates for drydocking, ship maintenance, repair, conversions, and new construction, from detailed or outline specifications, drawings, sketches, and / or verbal instructions supplied. In addition, this role is responsible for bid preparation for submission to owners, and for bid analysis of past contracts.
Note : Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 203 East Esplanade, North Vancouver
What you'll do
- Prepares labour and material estimates for drydocking, ship maintenance and repair, conversions, and new constructions based on accurate evaluations of owner-supplied specifications, terms and conditions, detailed or outline specifications, drawings, sketches, or following verbal instructions. This involves soliciting pricing from suppliers, consulting with Drydock personnel, contractors, regulatory bodies and trades, and applying general and specific knowledge of the work to be performed gained from past experience and analysis, to determine man-hour and material requirements and calculate the overall costs for the project.
- Communicates with owners / customer representatives and Project Managers throughout the bid process, after the contract is awarded, and during vessel refits, to ensure a clear understanding of the scope of work and to identify other potential work arising from the project.
- Carries out calculations (e.g. areas, weights, lengths, capacities, etc.) to form the basis for estimates and uses knowledge of Classification and Ship Safety Regulations to determine appropriate dimensions, materials, and equipment, if not specified.
- Research specialized products, equipment and systems, by locating and / or comparing sources, providing the purchaser with the relevant information and requests, and obtaining pertinent information and cost. Assesses the suitability of the item for the project at hand.
- Assesses scope and practicality of specifications and owner expectations by reviewing, discussing and clarifying details, visiting vessels, attending bidders' conferences and incorporating specification amendments to ensure the estimate is accurate and complete.
- Solicits bids for work to be contracted out by preparing and distributing specifications and drawings, arranging ship checks, if required, analyzing quotations, and selecting the best option.
- Provides management with summaries for estimated labour and material and overviews of work content, including work requiring special consideration with regard to complexity, time requirements, and non-availability of products or services.
- Prepares and submits bid documents or owners' bid submission sheet, and may sign bid, if directed by the Manager.
- Provides technical and administrative assistance to the Production department by preparing drawings and sketches, gathering customer contact information, preparing work-breakdown structures, obtaining docking information, maintaining estimating records and files, and sourcing, obtaining quotes and ordering materials from suppliers, ensuring that work can be completed on time.
- Monitors the cost of work and prepares monthly estimating reports for the Manager, Vancouver Drydock.
- Maintains positive relationships with customers through pre- and post-contract communication, ensuring that customers are completely satisfied.
- Ensures compliance of the SMC Safety and Environmental Policies and Procedures at the Vancouver Drydock.

The estimated salary for this position is $98,300 - $117,900. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
