Detailed Overview
In accordance with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC) standards of practice, Fraser Health mission, values and occupational therapy acute care standard, and working collaboratively and in partnership with the Clinical Practice Leader, clinical leaders, stakeholders, and the interprofessional care team in the provision of patient and family centered care, the Clinical Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of occupational therapy activities and staff for the assigned section. Monitors workload, prepares and adjusts work assignments, ensures staff training objectives are attained, and acts as a clinical resource. In collaboration with the Clinical Practice Leader, assists with budget planning and monitoring, preparing and conducting performance appraisals, providing input into service goals and objectives, and maintaining quality and safety standards for the assigned section. Contributes to the development of the occupational therapy profession through approved practice council and site / regional committee participation. Carries a clinical caseload as required. Responsibilities Supervises the day-to-day occupational therapy activities for the section to ensure operational requirements are met and optimal use of staff resources is achieved; prepares staff work schedules and assignments and adjusts according to workload. Ensures staffing levels are adequate to handle anticipated workload, reports concerns to the Clinical Practice Leader, and ensures workload measurements / statistics are maintained. Supervises designated staff; plans, provides and coordinates staff training and orientation, monitors staff performance, and in collaboration with the Clinical Practice Leader, writes and conducts performance appraisals and recruits / makes recommendations for new staff selection. Acts as a clinical resource within the section by providing clinical advice and guidance to staff In collaboration with the Clinical Practice Leader and for the section, develops and maintains clinical practice reference manuals, policies and procedures, and implements clinical practice, regulatory, accreditation, and Fraser Health occupational therapy acute care standards; participates in quality and safety activities by monitoring the effect of clinical practice changes, and providing evaluation and recommendation for new or revised policies, procedures, and Fraser Health occupational therapy acute care standard. Provides input into service goals and objectives; collaborates with clinical areas that receive occupational therapy services; in collaboration with the Clinical Practice Leader, provides recommendations for improvement. Assists in the preparation of operating and capital budget, makes recommendations on budget requirements, and monitors expenditures for the section. Reports and justifies variances and provides recommendations for remedial action. Provides student supervision and evaluation; coordinates student practicum learning activities and practicum experiences. Oversees the ongoing monitoring, calibration and upgrade of equipment and supplies; maintains supplies and inventory of equipment for the section. Collaborates with other occupational therapy clinical supervisors at the site and across Fraser Health in order to strive for practice standardization. Participates in research of new equipment and provides related recommendations. Participates in approved occcupational therapy and interprofessional research, special projects, and committees including practice councils and clinical decision support tool development. Assumes a clinical caseload as required; assesses, plans, implements and evaluates treatment of assigned patients. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience Current full registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC). Three years' recent and relevant occupational therapy experience including one year of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Skills and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of occupational therapy theory and practice within a patient and family-centered model of care. Comprehensive knowledge of the COTBC standards of practice and practice guidelines for clinical practitioners. Knowledge of occupational therapy standardized tests, measures, use of equipment and related techniques. Knowledge of other health care professions and their role in patient care. Ability to supervise, provide work direction and guidance to others, and provide effective performance evaluation. Ability to allocate staff assignments to meet program requirements using available resources. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to teach, coach, provide and coordinate staff and student education and orientation. Ability to organize, document and communicate clinical practice policy and procedures. Ability to prioritize, problem solve, coordinate workflow, and carry a clinical caseload as required. Ability to monitor operating and capital budgets. Ability to support evidence-based research including identifying research questions and promoting research opportunities. Ability to operate related equipment including relevant software applications. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
