Under the direction of Health Care Practitioners or Registered Nurse, responsible for providing health care services to patients seeking healthcare assistance within the scope of practice of the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) as determined by the College of Nurses of Ontario. The RPN provides emergency care, clinical nursing, health education, and crisis intervention in a fast-paced clinical setting.
Purpose and Key Functions :
Provide nursing assessment, plan, and intervention for patients including the provision of nursing care and health education.
Independently provide care to students using medical directives.
Perform patient assessments and determine an appropriate action plan of care within a defined scope of responsibility.
Triage patients entering the centre to appropriate physicians.
Monitor patient vital signs.
Provide general health and wellness education to patients and explain medical terminology and conditions to patients.
Provide first line supportive counselling to students who are experiencing a crisis and screen for risk of suicide.
Educate patients to live a healthy lifestyle including healthy eating, exercise, stress management, sexual health, healthy relationships and stress management
Communicate and collaborate with external health agencies as it pertains to various communicable diseases and information.
Organize the work of clinic teams daily.
Perform daily monitoring for vaccine fridge (temps, expiry dates etc)
Order vaccines and medications from public health
Schedule lab and diagnostic procedures, and follow-up appointments for patients.
Ensure adequate supplies are available in exam rooms, including medical and laboratory supplies, vaccinations, and medications.
Ensure exam rooms are prepped before each patient visit.
Prepare patient charts prior to patient visits.
Complete minor dressing changes for patient wounds and remove sutures.
Perform ear syringing and ear examinations
Perform phlebotomy on students unable to attend a laboratory.
Provide required assistance to physicians when completing medical procedures.
Administer a variety of injections such as vaccinations, immunizations, and skin tests.
Refer to medical literature to determine adverse drug reactions and interactions.
Utilize various medical diagnostic devices including, but not limited to, peak flow monitors and glucometers.
Document nursing notes in the electronic health records system.
Complete and submit various forms to external health agencies.
Calculate dosages, in accordance with established criteria, for the administration of medication.
Ensure that the appropriate medical information and literature is provided to patients.
Receive and resolve patient complaints and escalate unresolved issues to the appropriate area.
Organize transportation for clients with mental and physical health concerns.
Ensure test specimens are properly labeled and that requisitions are completed and sent to the lab for processing.
Update and maintain confidential files and records.
Prepare and send sensitive medical records to clients electronically
Handle sensitive material in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Supervision :
Frequently responsible for orientation and supervision of new RPN’s and students to use electronic medical record, and understand clinical policies and procedures.
Requirements :
2 year Community College diploma in Registered Practical Nursing.
Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a certified Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) and hold a current certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
Requires 3 years of providing care to a diverse patient population for a wide range of medical and mental health issues.
