Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced Commodity Buyer to join our wholesale distribution team, responsible for procuring lumber, OSB, plywood, and other building materials to support our network of retailers, contractors, and builders across Alberta.

As a key player in our supply chain operations, this role focuses on supplier management, contract negotiation, market analysis, and inventory optimization to ensure cost-effective purchasing and reliable supply. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the lumber and building materials market, along with strong analytical, negotiation, and strategic procurement skills.

This position reports directly to the Procurement Manager or Director of Supply Chain and collaborates closely with warehouse teams, sales, finance, and logistics to align procurement with business goals.

Key Responsibilities :

Strategic Sourcing & Procurement :

  • Source and procure lumber, OSB, plywood, and other commodity-based building materials from domestic and international suppliers.
  • Negotiate pricing, volume discounts, payment terms, and contracts with suppliers to secure the best possible cost and supply conditions.
  • Maintain a comprehensive supplier database and regularly assess new potential vendors to diversify supply options.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with mills, wholesalers, and manufacturers to ensure long-term procurement success.
  • Stay informed about market trends, supplier performance, and raw material availability to make proactive purchasing decisions.

Market & Industry Analysis :

  • Monitor commodity pricing trends, global market conditions, supply chain disruptions, and seasonal fluctuations to drive data-driven procurement strategies.
  • Analyze economic indicators, import / export data, and industry reports to anticipate price movements and mitigate risk.
  • Provide regular market intelligence updates to internal stakeholders, advising on pricing strategy and purchasing timing.
  • Develop forecasting models to predict material demand and cost fluctuations.
  • Inventory & Supply Chain Optimization :

  • Collaborate with warehouse and distribution teams to maintain optimal stock levels, avoiding excess inventory or shortages.
  • Work with logistics to coordinate inbound shipments, optimize freight costs, and reduce lead times.
  • Utilize ERP systems and procurement software to track orders, manage stock levels, and optimize purchasing cycles.
  • Align purchasing strategies with sales forecasts, customer demand, and seasonal buying patterns.
  • Develop and enforce best practices in inventory planning, procurement policies, and supplier performance metrics.
  • Supplier Relationship Management :

  • Conduct supplier performance evaluations, assessing quality, reliability, service levels, and compliance with contractual agreements.
  • Resolve supplier issues related to quality, delivery delays, or pricing discrepancies.
  • Identify and onboard new suppliers and alternative sourcing options to mitigate risk and increase competitive advantage.
  • Negotiate long-term supply agreements that support the company’s cost-saving and growth objectives.
  • Financial & Budget Management :

  • Develop and manage commodity purchasing budgets to align with corporate financial goals.
  • Monitor procurement spending and cost variances to ensure alignment with budget targets.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities through supplier negotiations, volume discounts, and process efficiencies.
  • Work with finance to track key financial KPIs related to procurement, such as cost per unit, margins, and working capital optimization.
  • Collaboration & Cross-Department Coordination :

  • Work closely with the sales team to align purchasing with customer needs and seasonal demands.
  • Collaborate with logistics and warehouse operations to ensure smooth inbound deliveries and inventory flow.
  • Partner with finance and leadership teams to set procurement strategies that align with overall business objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, industry regulations, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Qualifications & Skills :

    Required :

    3 to 5+ years of experience in procurement, commodity buying, or supply chain management within wholesale distribution, lumber, or building materials. ✅ Strong negotiation and contract management skills, with a proven ability to secure competitive pricing and supplier agreements.

    Deep understanding of commodity markets, pricing structures, and supply chain logistics.

    Experience in inventory management, demand planning, and procurement best practices.

    Proficiency with ERP systems, procurement software, and data analytics tools such as BizTrak.

    Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets, forecasting, and cost analysis.

    Excellent relationship-building skills to foster long-term partnerships with suppliers and internal stakeholders.

    Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.

    Knowledge of import / export regulations, freight logistics, and trade compliance.

    Preferred :

  • Professional certifications in procurement or supply chain management (e.g., SCMP, CPSM, CPP).
  • Experience working with wholesale distributors and multi-location purchasing operations.
  • Knowledge of sustainable sourcing practices and industry compliance regulations.
