The Toronto Star is currently recruiting for a Journalist classification in the Editorial Department on the Investigations team. Journalists can be assigned to any newsroom department across a variety of assignments and locations.
We are seeking a journalist with proven news reporting skills and a mastery of impactful journalism. This individual will be expected to chase stories that hold the powerful to account spotlight systemic abuses that imperil the vulnerable and take readers behind the scenes of impactful decisions by public officials and private sector leaders. They must discern whether a story should be short and turned out quickly or worth a deeper dig and pursue short medium and long stories where relevant and necessary. They must also assess how a story idea may resonate with readers and connect to an issue currently in the news.
The successful candidate will collaborate with teammates and colleagues from different departments throughout the newsroom to produce stories that are accurate comprehensive compelling and relevant. They are digitally savvy and ready to experiment with new forms of storytelling and incorporate feedback from customer analytics to ensure that content leads to engagement and subscriptions. Familiarity with filing freedom of information requests as well as data analysis skills will be considered an asset but are not a requirement.
Salary : $60547.97 $95740.19

This is a notice of vacancy under Article 8 of the collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M. The hours of work for this position will vary according to the assignment but will all conform to a standard 35hour work week as described under the collective agreement. This position will be located in Toronto.
Qualifications :
- Professional experience as a reporter
- Some experience with FOI and ATIP
- Excellent news judgment storytelling and multimedia skills
- Advanced writing skills and storytelling ability that lead to an engaging daily product
- A selfstarter who is flexible and able to generate quality story ideas
- Able to simultaneously manage multiple projects and tasks
- Relentlessly high standards; detailoriented and deadlinedriven
- Interviewing and newsgathering skills and instincts to draw out subjects and gather the relevant information required to bring a story to life
- Able to develop and maintain contacts and sources skillfully interview people in oftendemanding situations and show resourcefulness
- Diplomacy and welldeveloped interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with access to information procedures and databases
- Well versed in CP style
