General Information
The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications from prospective candidates to work as an Environmental Services Assistant with the Environmental Services division for summer 2024. Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Services and supervised by the Senior Environmental Analyst, the Environmental Services Assistant will assist the division in current areas of research including but not limited to : climate adaptation strategies, watershed management, and, environmental master planning to support land use strategies. This position will assist Division staff with a range of activities which may include but is not limited to : performing research and compiling information; field investigations; mapping and GIS analysis; development of communications and outreach materials; and, report writing.
Qualifications
- Preferred candidates will be enrolled in upper level Environmental, Resource or Land Use Planning, Management Program or related field.
- Experience in watershed or land use master planning such as hydrology, forestry, ecology, terrain analysis or other related and supporting knowledge in environmental master planning is preferred.
- Preference will also be given to candidates with knowledge and experience in development of communication and educational programs, performing research, report writing, field studies and community consultation.
- A valid Class 5 or Class 7 BC Driver’s License is required.
- The successful candidate will possess : Effective verbal and written communication skills, social media skills.Effective interpersonal skills including working well with subject area specialist and the general public.The ability to multi-task and work independently with minimal supervision. Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Preference will be given to candidates aged 15-30 years as per the Canada Summer Jobs Program through Service Canada, however candidates outside of this age range will be considered.
Hours of Work
This position is available for a period of 17 weeks commencing May 6, 2024 and continuing until August 30, 2024, subject to funding. Hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
Salary
This temporary position is unionized (CUPE Local 358), and is compensated at $24.58 per hour (2024 rate). Additionally, this position will receive 14.5% in lieu of benefits, statutory holidays and vacation, bringing the compensation to $28.14 per hour.
