About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Climate Change Mitigation, the Greenhouse Gas Engineer plays a pivotal role in advancing Nova Scotia’s commitments to climate change mitigation. As a key member of the Climate Change Division, you will implement programs and policies supporting provincial and national greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Your work will involve technical analysis, policy development, and stakeholder engagement to address greenhouse gas emissions monitoring, reporting, and verification protocols. You will also provide expertise on innovative technologies and frameworks that promote sustainable practices across various sectors.

Primary Accountabilities

The Greenhouse Gas Engineer provides technical expertise and analytical support to ensure compliance with provincial regulations and international standards for greenhouse gas measurement, reporting, and verification. This includes reviewing and validating emissions reports from regulated entities, analyzing data to identify trends, and using modeling tools to forecast future scenarios to support evidence-based decision-making. The Engineer collaborates with industry, government, and other stakeholders to promote compliance, share insights, and encourage the adoption of best practices in greenhouse gas reduction.

In addition, the Engineer provides expert advice on innovative climate change mitigation technologies, supports Environmental Assessment reviews, and contributes to programs that evaluate progress toward emissions reduction goals. They also help align provincial actions with federal climate change requirements, working to foster collaboration across sectors and contribute to ongoing research and development efforts.

Qualifications and Experience

You will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and recent experience specific to the field of greenhouse gas emissions measurement, monitoring and / or management.

You are actively registered as a member of Engineers Nova Scotia (ENS). If not currently registered, you can become registered as a member of ENS immediately upon hire.

Knowledge / experience requirements :

  • Experience in greenhouse gas quantification, measurement, and monitoring for diverse industries.
  • Familiarity with measuring / estimating fuel combustion and industrial process emissions.
  • Familiarity with international standards such as ISO 14064 and IPCC guidelines.
  • Understanding provincial, national, and international climate change policies and plans.
  • Accuracy in data analysis and report writing.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, multitask effectively, and solve problems proactively.
  • Strong organizational skills, sound decision-making, and adaptability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools : written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Assets

The following are considered assets :

  • Expertise in renewable energy technologies, carbon capture utilization and storage and energy efficiency practices.
  • Experience in developing or analyzing energy modeling projections and decarbonization pathways.
  • Experience contributing to the creation of environmental legislation, regulations, or compliance.
  • Understanding of energy markets and grid dynamics, particularly in Nova Scotia.
  • Experience in sectors undergoing significant transformation, such as renewable energy integration or industrial decarbonization.
  • Demonstrated dedication to addressing climate change and sustainability.
  • Equivalency

    An Engineer must be “Licensed to Practice” as determined by Engineers of Nova Scotia (ENS) before being classified as an Engineer 3.
