Science Communication Pre-six Lecturer
Salary range :
A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a standard five-credit course is $9,890 - $11,131 (based on salary points 6-10). Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year.
Percent time :
Variable, based on the course load assigned.
Anticipated start :
Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit's instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments made in spring quarter 2025 through spring quarter 2026. Initial appointments with effective dates outside of this recruitment period will require an alternative open recruitment.
Position duration :
Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position description
The Science Communication Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach various graduate and undergraduate-level courses. Course topics include science newswriting and editing, feature writing and editing, profile and essay writing, multimedia storytelling, and investigative and policy reporting. See the UCSC Course Catalog for a complete list and descriptions of the program's courses.
We seek applications from practicing journalists and science writers to teach graduate students the art and craft of science writing at a national, professional level. Lecturers will be expected to edit and guide student work to a professional standard, as well as inspire and promote student professional development. Ideal candidates will have strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Applicants with experience in public outreach are strongly encouraged to apply.
The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the inclusive excellence of the academic community through their teaching and other assigned duties.
The hiring unit will not sponsor employment-eligible immigration statuses for this position.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications

B.A. / B.S. (or equivalent foreign degree) in science, English, journalism, or closely related field.
A minimum of one quarter (or semester) teaching experience at the college or university level and / or experience leading workshops and / or training exercises for science communication professionals.
A minimum of three published articles in professional science journalism.
