Lead Mechanical Engineer

1) The Lead Mechanical Engineer will be a key figure in ensuring all projects are delivered successfully, while combining strong leadership and project management skills.

The candidate must have demonstrated experience with:

a. Piping and pumping systems for industrial processes.

b. Material handling equipment.

c. HVAC equipment and other climate control systems.

d. Compressed air systems.

e. Dust Collection systems.

f. Residential, commercial and institutional plumbing systems.

g. Boiler systems.

h. Pressure Vessels.

i. De-watering systems for mines.

j. Other mechanical systems as required.

2) Foster and encourage the professional development and growth of mechanical team members through effective mentoring. This includes technical, interpersonal, communication, and job management skills. Essentially, the lead must be able to help all team members (not just mechanical) develop all aspects of their professional abilities. The lead also needs to be able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their team and assess the risk of the project or potential project.

3) Responsible for managing mechanical team workload. This involves:

a. Efficiently manage and delegate work to team members.

b. Ensuring team members have a balanced workload and a workload which compliments their skills and overall interests.

c. Attending weekly resource planning meetings to review ongoing and upcoming projects. (This feeds into item 2).

d. Allocating team members to projects and ensuring their skill sets are being developed as well as being used efficiently and effectively.

e. Monitoring team member progress working through ongoing projects, ensuring project schedule and budget is achieved.

4) Directing technical execution of projects ranging in scale from small, simplistic projects, to large, multi discipline projects. The projects may be for residential, commercial, institutional, light/heavy industrial and possibly other market segments serviced by the client. The lead is responsible for ensuring that mechanical team members have the appropriate technical direction and support to ensure that sound mechanical engineering and design approaches are being implemented on projects. This includes but is not limited to:

a) Formulate project execution:

i. Selection of technologies (design software (CAD, FEA, Point Cloud Processing, etc….), hardware (scanning & metrology technology) to efficiently complete projects.

ii. Sequencing of the execution of work using available technologies.

iii. Technical execution of the project – conceptualize what design will be incorporated to achieve the project goals while adhering fundamental engineering principles (i.e. provide safe, practical, cost-effective designs and solutions) to clients.

iv. Selecting vendor solutions that will accomplish client project objectives.

v. Standards and design compliance such as TSSA, CSA, ASME VIII, etc…

b) Facilitating project kick offs, where the project budget, schedule and technical deliverables are communicated to the mechanical team members. The project execution strategy will be communicated to the team such that the team is setup to successfully complete the job. Along with this, the mechanical lead should challenge team members to come up with their own solutions for project design & engineering challenges. This will help foster team member personal development.

c) Coordination with other disciplines.

d) Attend site visits as needed.

e) Direct the creation and development of scopes of work (SOW’s).

f) Direct the creation and development of engineering standards for projects.

g) Participate in design review meetings with clients, vendors, & other project stakeholders. This would include but is not limited to the following:

*Present designs (3D models/Point Clouds) at various stages of development to clients.

*Present drawings at various stages of development to clients.

*Facilitate PHR’s and other failure mode effects & analysis (FMEA) activities with clients and colleagues

*Facilitate internal design review meetings.

*Review other relevant project content & ensure it is properly applied or integrated into the project.

*Lead and participate in continuous improvement activities.

5) Participate in business development. This involves the following:

a) Scope our potential jobs by meeting with prospective clients and providing “on the spot” innovative solutions/discussions for engineering/design challenges for which the client would provide comprehensive engineering services.

b) Create proposals and budgets for projects.

c) Foster and develop strong working relationships with existing and new clients.

d) Develop new clients.
